    Player Outlook

Simply holding down a rotation spot for as long as Jeremy Guthrie has deserves some recognition, but after the infamous fakeout of 2013, when he began the year 5-0, Fantasy owners have figured out he's really not intended for them. And major-league clubs could be on the verge of doing the same. The Royals declined their 2016 option on Guthrie and didn't even stick with him for all of 2015, bumping him and his near-6.00 ERA to the bullpen in August. Even if he bags a rotation spot somewhere, he's an innings-eater with an ERA over 4.00 in a best-case scenario, which is scraping the bottom of the barrel even in league-specific formats.

    Player News
    • Guthrie's 2016 club option was declined, Andy McCullough of The Kansas City Star reports. Guthrie had a brutal 2015 campaign, recording a 5.95 ERA and 1.55 WHIP in 148.1 innings. Even with expected changes in the Royals starting rotation next season, the 36-year-old will likely not return to the club after spending three years with the organization. He should get another opportunity elsewhere, but he's unlikely to generate much fantasy interest in redraft leagues next season.

    • Royals SP Jeremy Guthrie set to start next week
      By RotoWire Staff

Royals starting pitcher Jeremy Guthrie will start Tuesday's game against Seattle, Jeffrey Flanagan of MLB.com reports. Guthrie will rejoin the rotation over the final weeks of the regular season, taking the spot vacated by the struggling Danny Duffy. If the current rotation remains intact, Guthrie is on pace to make three starts before the postseason.

    • Struggling Royals right-hander Danny Duffy has been moved to the bullpen, Andy McCullough of the Kansas City Star reports. Duffy is winless in his last four starts, and he was tagged for four earned runs on six hits in just 2 1/3 innings in Cleveland on Wednesday. The Royals will move Jeremy Guthrie back into the rotation in Duffy's place, but McCullough notes that the latter will still compete for a spot on the postseason roster. Guthrie wasn't exactly tearing it up when he was moved to the bullpen, but he's been ineffective in relief as well. He owns a 5.55 ERA on the year. Guthrie will start Tuesday against Seattle.

    • The potential removal of ineffective Jeremy Guthrie from the rotation for the Royals has Ned Yost considering Kris Medlen as his replacement, according to the Kansas City Star. Guthrie could find himself in the bullpen after not being able to finish five innings Wednesday and having his ERA rise to 5.64. He is scheduled to start Monday against Baltimore, but that might not happen. Yost won't indicate either way. "I haven't thought about it," he said. "Like I'm going to sit here and tell you if he is or isn't." Chris Young is another possibility, but Medlen has performed extremely well recently with 11 consecutive scoreless innings and 10 strikeouts during that time. Medlen was an excellent starter with Atlanta in 2012 and 2013 before losing time to Tommy John surgery.

    • Any starter that throws 111 pitches in 4 1/3 innings is lucky when he doesn't lose. Consider Royals right-hander Jeremy Guthrie lucky. Guthrie indeed reached his pitch limit in Cincinnati before getting out of the fifth, but wound up with a no-decision. He surrendered three runs on seven hits with three walks and four strikeouts. It appeared he might not survive the first when Joey Votto and Brandon Phillips took him deep. An RBI double by Eugenio Suarez in the third added the final run against him. Guthrie failed to follow up a strong start after a long stretch of mediocrity. His ERA not sits at a miserable 5.65.
