    Kevin Whalen promoted to the majors

    Tigers right-hander Kevin Whalen has been promoted from Triple-A Toledo to the majors, according to the Toledo Blade on Sunday. The Tigers are in need of bullpen depth after a 19-inning marathon loss to Toronto. Whalen converted 20 saves and posted a 1.85 ERA and a 1.08 WHIP over 39 innings with the Mud Hens.

    Kevin Whalen back with Detroit organization

    Right-hander Kevin Whalen, who had only a cup of coffee in the majors with the Yankees in 2011, is back with the organization that drafted him in 2005. The 30-year-old reliever has signed with the Tigers. Whalen has yielded just 296 hits with 562 strikeouts in 443 2/3 innings during his minor league career. But those impressive numbers haven't translated into success. He has averaged five walks per nine innings, which has prevented him from being promoted.
