      Matt Antonelli retires from baseball

      Infielder Matt Antonelli, who was with the Cleveland Indians organization earlier this season before being released, has retired from baseball, reports. He will become an assistant coach with Wake Forest University. Antonelli saw eight plate appearances in three games with Triple-A Columbus earlier this season before Cleveland released him. He played in 21 games for the Padres back in 2008 at the age of 23 and hit .193 with a home run and three RBI.

      Indians release Matt Antonelli

      The Indians have released minor-league infielder Matt Antonelli, the club announced Tuesday. Antonelli was a project for the club, as the 28-year-old was a top-50 prospect according to Baseball America in 2008. The 2006 first-round MLB Draft pick made his first and last appearance in the majors for San Diego in 2008.

      Yankees designate Antonelli

      The Yankees acquired relief pitcher Chad Qualls from Philadelphia Sunday, and designated minor-league infielder Matt Antonelli for assignment to make room on the 40-man roster.
