  • Gerardo Parra: Chooses to end career

Nationals broadcaster Dan Kolko announced during MASN's broadcast of Sunday's game against the Angels that Parra has elected to retire and will join Washington's front office as a special assistant, Mark Zuckerman of MASNSports.com reports. Parra's decision to end his playing career doesn't come as a major surprise after he opted not to report to Triple-A Rochester when he failed to win a spot on the Nationals' Opening Day roster. He was later released May 1, and after pondering his options on the open market, Parra ultimately chose to hang up his cleats. He'll retire with a lifetime .275 average, two Gold Glove Awards and one World Series ring, which he won as a member of the Nationals in 2019.

  • Nationals' Gerardo Parra: Fails to win roster spot

Parra will not be a part of the Nationals' Opening Day roster. Parra was merely in camp as a non-roster invitee, and the Nationals evidently didn't see a spot for him even as a veteran leader off the bench. It's not a particularly surprising development, as he hit .237/.292/.351 in 53 games for the team last season.

  • Nationals' Gerardo Parra: Rejoins Nationals

Parra signed a minor-league contract with the Nationals on Sunday that includes an invitation to major-league camp, Jesse Dougherty of The Washington Post reports. Parra has played in 142 games for the Nationals between the 2019 and 2021 campaigns, and he's now back with the organization once again. The veteran outfielder hit .237/.292/.351 with two home runs, 13 runs and 10 RBI in 107 plate appearances last season.

  • Nationals' Gerardo Parra: Activated from injured list

Parra (knee) was activated off the injured list Saturday, Jessica Camerato of MLB.com reports. Parra will wind up missing just shy of a month with right knee inflammation. He's unlikely to play more than a small role over the final two games of the year, as he's not in the starting lineup for Saturday's game against the Red Sox. Josh Rogers (hamstring) hit the injured list to clear a roster spot.

  • Nationals' Gerardo Parra: Lands on injured list

Parra was placed on the 10-day injured list Sunday with right knee inflammation, Jessica Camerato of MLB.com reports. Parra underwent surgery on the same knee late last year and has recently been experiencing discomfort, and he'll be sidelined for at least the next 10 days. Josh Rogers, who was recalled from Triple-A Rochester for Saturday's doubleheader and started Game 2, will remain with the big-league club and take Parra's roster spot.

  • Nationals' Gerardo Parra: Notches first steal

Parra went 0-for-2 with a hit by pitch, a stolen base and a run scored in Friday's 8-4 loss to Atlanta. The 34-year-old generated a run the hard way after getting plunked by Atlanta starter Kyle Muller in the fifth inning. Parra advanced to second on a wild pitch, stole third and came home on a sacrifice fly to give Washington its only lead of the game. This was Parra's first start since July 30, as the outfielder has taken on more of a reserve role lately. He is slashing a meager .247/.287/.383 with two home runs, 10 RBI and 12 runs scored through 88 plate appearances.

  • Nationals' Gerardo Parra: Losing hold of everyday role

Parra is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Cubs. Parra is sitting for the fourth time in six games, and he looks like he'll be relegated to a reserve role for much of the final two months of the season as the 48-56 Nationals turn their focus to developing younger players. Yadiel Hernandez will start in left field and bat cleanup Sunday.

  • Nationals' Gerardo Parra: Gets breather Saturday

Parra isn't starting Saturday's game against the Cubs, Matt Weyrich of NBC Sports Washington reports. Parra will get a chance to reset after he went 0-for-4 with a strikeout Friday. Yadiel Hernandez will take over in left field and bat fourth.

  • Nationals' Gerardo Parra: Sitting Sunday

Parra is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Orioles, Jessica Camerato of MLB.com reports. Josh Harrison gets the nod in left field in the series finale, but Parra has emerged as the primary option at the position after Kyle Schwarber (hamstring) was placed on the injured list earlier this month. Parra started in left field in five of the past six games, going 7-for-20 with a double, three runs and an RBI.

  • Nationals' Gerardo Parra: Three hits in rout

Parra went 3-for-5 with a double, two runs scored and an RBI in Monday's rout of the Marlins. Getting the start in left field and hitting seventh, Parra collected his share of an 18-run, 18-hit barrage by the Nats' offense. The veteran outfielder has hit safely in six straight appearances, batting .364 (8-for-22) over that stretch with a homer, two doubles, six RBI and four runs, and he should continue to see semi-regular playing time while Kyle Schwarber (hamstring) remains on the shelf.

  • Nationals' Gerardo Parra: Clubs second homer

Parra went 1-for-4 with a three-run home run in Friday's 24-8 loss to San Diego. After Victor Robles left the game with dizziness early on, Parra was called on to patrol center field. The 34-year-old's only hit of the game was a three-run blast in the sixth inning. Parra has hit safely in his last four games, adding five RBI and a pair of runs scored in that span. He's still slashing only .200/.256/.425 through 43 plate appearances in a limited role.

  • Nationals' Gerardo Parra: Receives call-up

The Nationals selected Parra's contract from Triple-A Rochester on Sunday. A key performer for the Nationals in their run to the World Series in 2019, Parra kicked off his second stint in the organization in February, when he inked a minor-league deal following a one-year stay in Japan. After reaching base at a .380 clip while playing all three outfield spots during his time at Rochester, Parra should prove useful in a depth role while fourth outfielder Andrew Stevenson (oblique) is on the shelf.

  • Nationals' Gerardo Parra: Moves to minor-league camp

Parra was assigned to minor-league camp Saturday, Jesse Dougherty of The Washington Post reports. Parra joined his former club as a non-roster invitee after spending last season in Japan. He didn't get much of a chance to claim a roster spot this spring, as recovery from knee surgery limited him to just seven games. He could find himself back in the big leagues at some point this season, though the fact that he's not on the 40-man roster hurts his chances.

  • Nationals' Gerardo Parra: Makes first center field appearance

Parra made his first spring training appearance in center field Thursday, Mark Zuckerman of MASNSports.com reports. Parra has played in five games this spring, though none have come in center field. Manager Davey Martinez said that Parra will have to prove he can handle the position defensively in order to make the roster, making this progress pivotal for Parra's outlook.

  • Nationals' Gerardo Parra: Enters spring lineup

Parra (knee) will start in left field and will bat sixth in Monday's Grapefruit League game against the Cardinals, Mark Zuckerman of MASNSports.com reports. Parra will be making his spring debut after the Nationals deliberately eased him along up to this point in camp while he worked back from offseason surgery on his right knee. After spending the 2020 campaign with Japan with the Yomiuri Giants, Parra returned stateside this winter, joining the Nationals on a minor-league deal. He's competing for a role with the big club as a fifth outfielder.

  • Nationals' Gerardo Parra: Could make spring debut this week

Parra continues to adjust to playing with a knee brace following surgery last fall, and he could be cleared for Grapefruit League action as early as this week, Jessica Camerato of MLB.com reports. "He's got to catch up a little bit with his bat," Nationals manager Dave Martinez said Saturday. "Right now, he's about 85 percent and he feels no pain, so that's good." The veteran outfielder returned to the Nats this offseason after playing in Japan in 2020, and he's competing for the last spot on the bench. The team's eventual roster construction will be as big a factor in determining whether Parra wins the job as the health of his knee, but the memories of his pinch-hitting heroics during the team's championship 2019 season could make him the sentimental favorite.

  • Nationals' Gerardo Parra: Plays in intrasquad game

Parra (knee) participated in the Nationals' "B" game Wednesday, seeing action at designated hitter and in right field while hitting a double and drawing two walks in his plate appearances, Jesse Dougherty of The Washington Post reports. Washington has been taking it easy with Parra this spring while he works back from offseason right knee surgery, but he looks to be nearing a return to full strength. According to Jessica Camerato of MLB.com, manager Dave Martinez estimated that the non-roster invitee is about 85 percent recovered from surgery. Parra only played three of his innings in the outfield Wednesday, so he may need to prove his knee can hold up defensively for nine innings to have a realistic chance at winning an Opening Day bench role with the Nationals.

  • Nationals' Gerardo Parra: Could return next week

Parra (knee) could return to action in the middle of next week, Jessica Camerato of MLB.com reports. Parra underwent knee surgery during the offseason and has had a slow start to spring training as a result. However, he's been taking at-bats in live batting practice and has been running the bases in recent days. Manager Dave Martinez said Saturday that he's hopeful that he'll be able to make his spring debut sometime next week. Once he's fully healthy, Parra is expected to compete for a depth outfield Rome with the major-league club.

  • Nationals' Gerardo Parra: Recovering from knee surgery

Parra underwent knee surgery late in the autumn and is currently working at about 70-to-80 percent, Matt Weyrich of NBC Sports Washington reports. The 33-year-old expects to be ready for Opening Day, but he's got some work to do before being fully healthy. Parra spent last season in Japan and rejoined the Nationals as a non-roster invitee, so any limitations in spring training will affect his standing as he competes for a roster spot.

  • Nationals' Gerardo Parra: Returns to Nationals

Parra signed with the Nationals on Wednesday as a non-roster invitee, Chelsea Janes of The Washington Post reports. Parra spent the 2020 campaign with the Yomiuri Giants of Japan's Nippon Professional Baseball, hitting .266 with four home runs and 13 RBI over 46 games with the team. He'll now get to compete for a spot on the Nationals' active roster ahead of the 2021 season.
