Royals RP Joba Chamberlain will become free agent

The Royals have announced that veteran reliever Joba Chamberlain will elect to become a free agent. This seemed likely after the Royals waived him prior to the start of the World Series. Chamberlain will now have an opportunity to sign with another club during the offseason. He will likely earn a minor league contract from a bullpen-needy team, but it remains to be seen if he can gain a foothold with a major league club in 2015.

Royals' Joba Chamberlain: Designated for assignment Tuesday

Chamberlain was designated for assignment Tuesday. Chamberlain made just six appearances with the Royals after the club signed him to a minor league deal in the beginning of September, posting a 7.94 ERA and 1.765 WHIP in 5.2 innings. The 30-year-old will have the opportunity to become a free agent if he so chooses, but it's unclear what kind of interest he might receive on the open market after a dismal 2015 campaign.

Tigers RP Joba Chamberlain designated for assignment

The Tigers have designated reliever Joba Chamberlain for assignment Friday. It's been a rough run lately for Chamberlain, who was in his second season with the Tigers. He had a 1.06 ERA as of June 16, but he posted a 14.40 ERA in his last seven appearances, raising his season ERA to 4.09. "I know Joba struggled here recently at the end, but without Joba, we don't win the division last year. Simple as that," manager Brad Ausmus said, per Chamberlain was a popular figure with the Yankees and a stellar reliever very early in his career. He was moved to the rotation full-time in 2009 with New York, but his time as a starter lasted only one season before he was back in the bullpen. Since returning to a relief role in 2010, he is 10-12 with a 4.06 ERA in 266 appearances.
