Padres SP Ian Kennedy strikes out 11 Thursday

Padres starting pitcher Ian Kennedy (9-15) ended his season on a high note Thursday, striking out 11 Brewers while allowing just a run on five hits over six innings. This season represents a significant step backward for Kennedy, who didn't come close to duplicating last year's 201 innings, 207 strikeouts and 3.63 ERA despite making 30 starts. He struggled through much of September after briefly getting his ERA under the 4.00 mark, giving up 18 runs over the four starts immediately preceding Thursday's gem.Of course, this was a tough campaign for the Pads as a whole, as they entered the season with high expectations and roundly failed to deliver on them.

Padres SP Ian Kennedy strikes out five in loss to Rockies

Padres starting pitcher Ian Kennedy (8-15) hurled a quality start on Friday, allowing four runs (three earned) on six hits and a walk over six innings in a loss to the Rockies. He struck out five. Kennedy is one of very few pitchers who have success at Coors Field, but this is now three straight quality starts for him there. Home runs and walks have been the bugaboo this season for Kennedy, as he has allowed 29 homers and 50 walks in 28 starts this season. Kennedy shows flashes of brilliance, but mixes that too much with poor outings to completely trust him for standard-mixed leagues. He has to square off against Madison Bumgarner in his next start on Thursday in what should be a lo-scoring game.

Padres SP Ian Kennedy walks six Monday and still wins

Years from now nobody will remember that Padres starter Ian Kennedy recorded a really ugly win on Aug. 10, 2015. But it sure was an ugly win. Kennedy threw 98 pitches in five innings and walked six Reds, but somehow escaped to raise his record to 7-10. He allowed one run on two hits and fanned four. The lone run came via a Jay Bruce blast leading off the second. Kennedy responded by walking three that inning and two more in the fourth. He can be excused for the relative dud - he arrived on the mound with four consecutive quality starts.

Awful first inning dooms Padres SP Ian Kennedy to defeat

Padres starter Ian Kennedy recovered after a horrific first inning Wednesday in Milwaukee. But it was too little, too late. Kennedy allowed five hits (including the cycle) in his first trip to the mound. The biggies were a two-run homer to Jonathan Lucroy and three-run triple to Shane Peterson. He then blanked the Brewers over the next six innings and finished with seven hits surrendered, no walks and seven strikeouts. The quality start was his fourth straight. Kennedy has given up 19 runs over his last 60 1/3 innings, but his record is just 3-5 during that stretch.
