Cubs RP Pedro Strop cleans up mess for third save Saturday

Cubs reliver Pedro Strop worked a perfect ninth inning Saturday, striking out one, to notch his third save of the season in a win over the Cardinals. Hector Rondon came out to start the ninth inning in a non-save situation, hit the only batter he faced and promptly got ejected. Zac Rosscup then allowed three straight hits, forcing Strop to come in and put out the fire. Rondon is still manager Joe Maddon's top choice as closer, but Strop is more than capable of handling the job should he be called upon again.

Cubs RP Pedro Strop pitches scoreless inning Friday

Cubs pitcher Pedro Strop pitched a scoreless inning against the Cardinals on Friday. While Strop has struggled with walks a bit this year, Friday was his fifth consecutive appearance without issuing a free pass. On the other hand, he has just one hold in his last nine appearances. Considering that he had 12 holds in 15 appearances immediately before this run, it looks like Strop's situational usage has changed a bit.

Cubs RP Pedro Strop turns victory into defeat Wednesday

Pedro Strop was forced to close Wednesday for the Cubs after Jason Motte was used in both ends of the Tuesday doubleheader. Instead of closing, Strop opened the door for the Cardinals to win and they bashed their way right in. He entered with a 6-5 lead in the ninth and promptly retired the first two batters. But he walked Matt Carpenter and surrendered a home run to Jhonny Peralta to disappoint the Wrigley Field fans. Strop had yielded just one run in his previous 15 2/3 innings pitched.

Jason Motte save Sunday throws Cubs closer role into question

Joe Maddon declared Saturday that his removal of closer Hector Rondon from a save situation did not signal his loss of that role. Well, Rondon did not come out to pitch the ninth for the Cubs on Sunday - he had already thrown a scoreless eighth. Jason Motte earned the save instead. Since Pedro Strop finished the game Saturday, it remains to be seen which one of those three is now the closer or if Maddon is opting for a by-committee approach. Motte, who won in relief Saturday and peaked in 2012 with 42 saves for St. Louis, pitched a 1-2-3 ninth Sunday. He has not allowed a run in his last nine appearances.

Hector Rondon still Cubs closer despite getting pulled Saturday

Joe Maddon has quelled any closer controversy brewing with the Cubs. Maddon called on Pedro Strop in the ninth inning Saturday to shut down the Nationals after usual closer Hector Rondon walked Anthony Rendon upon entering. But he announced after the game that it was a one-time deal. "For me, it was about winning the game today," he told the Chicago Tribune. "I am not ordaining anyone new." Rondon has converted 10 of 13 save opportunities this season. But he has allowed three runs on eight hits and two walks in his last 7 1/3 innings. The free passes were issued in his last two appearances. Strop, who fanned Clint Robinson and Ian Desmond to snag his second save, had been shaky as well before recording four consective scoreless outings.

Cubs' Pedro Strop: My fastball doesn't have life

Cubs pitcher Pedro Strop has struggled over the last week, giving up six earned runs on seven hits and four walks in just 2 1/3 innings over his last four appearances, and he feels like his fastball isn't up to its normal standards, reports. "I feel like my fastball doesn't have that life that I need," Strop said. Strop has appeared in 16 of his team's first 28 games, but he stopped short of blaming his recent struggles on overuse. "I don't want to say that," Strop said. "I'm kind of used to that. It's early in the season. I don't want to use that as a complaint." Strop was able to get out of a jam Friday and help preserve a lead in his team's 7-6 win over the Brewers. He owns a 4.26 ERA and 15:6 K:BB ratio in 12 2/3 innings.
