Diamondbacks' Welington Castillo: Starting catcher heading into 2016

Diamondbacks manager Chip Hale said Wednesday that Castillo has earned the starting catcher job based on his performance in 2015, Steve Gilbert of MLB.com reports. After a blistering few months following a trade from Seattle, Castillo cooled down the stretch to the point where he was splitting time evenly with Jarrod Saltalamacchia. He still finished with 19 homers, 57 RBI and 42 runs scored in 110 games, and while he did take a step back defensively, he returned plus value behind the plate. Chris Herrmann and Oscar Hernandez are currently the top options behind Castillo on the depth chart.

Diamondbacks C Welington Castillo plates three in win over Rockies

Diamondbacks catcher Welington Castillo went 1 for 3 with a walk, three RBI and a run scored in an 8-6 win over the Rockies on Thursday. Castillo has been slumping a bit as of late, but his second half has been pretty amazing considering the circumstances. He ranks in the top-five of all catchers in home runs and RBI since being acquired by the Diamondbacks and has been playing quite regularly. It remains to be seen if the Diamondbacks will rely on him in the future, but he certainly has made a nice case to reclaim the starting role next season.
