Padres' Alexei Ramirez: Signs one-year deal with Padres

Ramirez agreed to a one-year deal with the Padres on Thursday, Jony Heyman of CBS Sports reports. After the Padres reportedly showed interest in former Nationals shortstop Ian Desmond, the club opted to sign the veteran Ramirez on Thursday to shore up their middle infield defense. Ramirez doesn't offer the pop at the plate that Desmond does, but what he lacks in offensive production he makes up for with strong glovework. He fills a major need for the Padres, who had defensive struggles all over the diamond in 2015.

White Sox's Alexei Ramirez: Club option declined by White Sox

Ramirez's club option was declined Wednesday making the shortstop a free agent this offseason, Scott Merkin of MLB.com reports. Ramirez struggled in 2015, slashing .249/.285/.357 in 583 at-bats and his home run and RBI totals took a significant dip from last season. Still, multiple teams looking for help at shortstop will likely pursue his services with the expectation that Ramirez will have a bounce back season.

Ramirez is putting together his best month of the season (.327/.411/.490), but his overall numbers still leave a lot to be desired and it seems manager Robin Ventura is intent on giving Saladino more time over the final weeks.

White Sox SS Alexei Ramirez keys win with three-run homer

It's a poor season for White Sox shortstop Alexei Ramirez when he can celebrate inching his slugging percentage up to .308. That is by far a career-worst. But Ramirez can do nothing about the past and his present is looking pretty good. He remained on the hottest streak of the year Thursday in Cleveland with a three-run homer in the fourth that all but clinched the victory and added a single. It marked his first three-RBI game in 2015. Ramirez has two of his four home runs in his last four games and has five RBI over that stretch.
