Marlins' Chris Johnson: Signs one-year contract with Marlins

Johnson inked a one-year contract with the Marlins on Wednesday, Joe Frisaro of reports. Given the depth for the Marlins in the infield, it's tough to see Johnson earning a starting job for the club, but he should battle for a spot as a utility infielder. The veteran played 83 games between the Braves and Indians last season, batting .255/.272/.320 with tree home runs and 18 RBI combined between the two over 243 at-bats, but offers little to look forward to in most fantasy leagues.

Indians' Chris Johnson: Designated for assignment

Johnson was designated for assignment Thursday, Ryan Lewis of the Akron Beacon Journal reports. Johnson was traded over to the Indians during the 2015 season and played reasonably well as a member of the Tribe, batting .289 with seven RBI in 90 at-bats, but he also struck out 25 times in that span. With the Indians' recent addition of Rajai Davis, the club opted to DFA Johnson in order to clear a roster spot for the veteran outfielder. "It was a tough decision. As we looked at how we'd allocate playing time on our roster moving forward, we found it' be pretty difficult to get [Johnson] some at-bats. That led to the decision," said president of baseball operations Chris Antonetti.

Indians 3B Giovanny Urshela sits out second straight game

Indians third baseman Giovanny Urshela is out of the lineup Saturday against the White Sox. Urshela is sitting for the second consecutive night, as manager Terry Francona has elected to give Chris Johnson the start at third base. The rookie has had a tough go in his first exposure to the majors, posting an on-base percentage of .278 and providing only 14 extra-base hits in 257 at-bats. He could lose more time to Johnson and Jose Ramirez at the hot corner over the final two weeks of the regular season.
