      Cubs prospect Kyle Schwarber among cuts Thursday

      The Cubs announced Thursday they cut 12 players from major-league camp, including top catcher prospect Kyle Schwarber,who was reassigned to minor-league camp. The other players reassigned to minor-league camp were pitchers Daniel Bard, Anthony Carter, Jorge De Leon, Gonzalez Germen and Francisley Bueno, infielder Chris Valaika, outfielders Albert Almora, Mike Baxter and Adron Chambers. Pitcher Blake Parker and pitcher Joseph Ortiz were optioned to Triple-A Iowa.

      Bryant, Russell, Schwarber among Cubs' non-roster invites

      The Cubs announced Friday they handed out spring invites to 19 non-roster players, which includes some of their top prospects. Among the top prospects invited to spring training are Kris Bryant , Albert Almora, Addison Russell and Kyle Schwarber. The remaining invites are Mike Baxter, Adron Chambers, Jonathan Herrera, Chris Valaika, Logan Watkins, Taylor Teagarden, Daniel Bard, Corey Black, Francisley Bueno, Anthony Carter, Hunter Cervenka, Jorge De Leon, Pierce Johnson, Armando Rivero and Donn Roach.

      Cubs outright three players Wednesday

      The Cubs have outrighted Josh Vitters , Chris Valaika and Ryan Kalish to Triple-A Wednesday. The move takes all three players off the 40-man roster. Vitters and Kalish had some prospect buzz early in their careers, but neither has lived up to the hype. The team will likely turn to other options next season.

      Chris Valaika swats third home run Wednesday

      Cubs first baseman Chris Valaika went 2 for 3 with a walk and a two-run home run in his team's 6-2 win over the Brewers Wednesday. After the Brewers took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning, Valaika put his team on top for good in his first trip to the plate, slugging a home run to left field in the bottom of the second before his team scored four more runs in the third. He has hit .208/.266/.347 with three home runs and nine RBI in 72 at-bats.

      Chris Valaika slugs first home run Wednesday

      Cubs second baseman Chris Valaika went 1 for 4 with a two-run home run in his team's 8-3 loss to the Giants Wednesday. It was the first home run of the season for Valaika, who was shifted into the lineup once Starlin Castro was scratched to attend to a family emergency. Valaika owns a .182/.222/.273 line in 33 at-bats.

      Cubs make several moves Friday

      The Cubs announced several roster moves prior to Friday's game against the Dodgers, per The team added newly-acquired pitcher Felix Doubront to the actove roster and immediately placed him on the 15-day disabled list with a calf strain. The team also recalled reliever Blake Parker and Chris Valaika from Triple-A Iowa. Valaika batted .278 with 10 homers, 21 doubles and 50 RBI at Iowa.

      Cubs sign Chris Valaika to minor-league deal

      The Cubs have signed infielder Chris Valaika to a minor-league deal with an invitation to spring training, Fox Sports reports. Valaika hit .219/.261/.344 with one home run and nine RBI in 64 at-bats with the Marlins last season. He also hit .246/.308/.362 with three home runs and 11 RBI in 130 at-bats with Triple-A New Orleans.

      Chris Valaika stays in Marlins' system

      Marlins infielder Chris Valaika was outrighted to Triple-A New Orleans Thursday after clearing waivers. Valaika was recalled from his rehab assignment Tuesday, but was then designated for assignment to clear a roster spot.

      Chris Valaika recalled, activated, designated

      Marlins infielder Chris Valaika (wrist) was recalled from his rehab assignment Tuesday and activated off the 60-day disabled list. Unfortunately, Valaika was then designated for assignment. Valaika hit .250 (5 for 20) with three doubles and two RBI in five rehab games for Triple-A New Orleans.

      Chris Valaika moved to 60-day DL

      Marlins infielder Chris Valaika (wrist) was transferred to the 60-day disabled list Sunday. Valaika has been sidelined since early May.
