Cubs' Jason Heyward: To sign with Cubs

Heyward has reportedly agreed to sign with the Cubs, according to Gordon Wittenmyer of the Chicago Sun-Times. Several teams, including the Nationals and Cardinals, had been vying to sign the Heyward during the Winter Meetings, but the Cubs appear to have landed the talented outfielder. Though the Cubs have not officially announced the signing, Mark Gonzalez of the Chicago Tribune reports that Heyward agreed to sign a multi-year deal with the Cubs. Heyward will provide Gold Glove caliber defense in the Chicago outfield in addition to an excellent ability to get on base (.359 OBP in 2015). He is a career .311/.376/.522 hitter at Wrigley Field.

      Jason Heyward: Declines qualifying offer

Heyward declined his qualifying offer from the Cardinals on Friday and will remain a free agent, Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports. It was simply a formality for Heyward to turn the deal down, as he's in line for a multi-year and more lucrative deal. The 26-year-old had an impressive season in his lone year in St. Louis, slashing .293/.359/.439 with 13 homers and 23 steals. The Cardinals will still try to retain him but will now get a draft pick as compensation if Heyward signs elsewhere.

      Jason Heyward: Receives Qualifying Offer

Heyward received a qualifying offer from the Cardinals Friday. This move was considered a formality, as the 26-year-old is on the cusp of a mega-deal heading into the offseason. St. Louis has repeatedly stressed they would like to bring their outfielder back, but Heyward's age and terrific 2015 season may have priced him out of the Cardinals budget. He could receive a contract worth nearly $200 million this offseason, but it remains to be seen which clubs may be in the running for his services.

Cardinals RF Jason Heyward still out Tuesday with hamstring injury

Cardinals right fielder Jason Heyward will miss a second straight game, as a hamstring injury is keeping him out of Tuesday's starting lineup. The severity of Heyward's injury is not clear, and it is not known if he will be available off the bench for Tuesday's game against the Giants. Manager Mike Matheny said it's likely Heyward is dealing with just a cramp. The team will take it slow with their start right fielder and continue to monitor him, according to KMOX. Rookie Stephen Piscotty is getting the start in right field, while batting second on Tuesday.
