• Newby not looking like 50th-round pick

News: The Sports Xchange reports Diamondbacks minor leaguer Kyler Newby, a former 50th-round draft pick out of Mesa (Ariz.) College, was 4-2 with a 1.55 ERA for Ponce of the Puerto Rican winter league, leading the league in ERA while compiling a streak of 24 1/3 scoreless innings. Newby did not allow a home run in 46 1/3 innings, while striking out 45 in 46 1/3 innings. "He's not afraid to challenge hitters," Diamondbacks farm director Mike Bell said.
Analysis: Newby totaled a 3.45 ERA at Double-A last season and even made 11 starts after Barry Enright was called to the majors. He did well as a starter in winter ball, leaving the door open for him to become a rotation candidate for Arizona. Still, he has a lot of work to do before getting the majors, so continue to ignore Newby in Fantasy.
  • D-Backs make a slew of cuts

News: The D-Backs optioned infielder Pedro Ciriaco and pitchers Leyson Septimo, Daniel Stange and Cesar Valdez to minor league camp Monday. The club also reassigned pitchers Tommy Layne, Kyler Newby, Wes Roemer, Bryan Shaw and Matt Torra, catcher Konrad Schmidt, infielder Mark Hallberg and outfielder Collin Cowgill to minor league camp. The team now has a total of 46 players in camp, including 23 pitchers, five catchers, 11 infielders and seven outfielders.
Analysis: Stange is the most likely to help the D-Backs this season, but none of these players project to play in the majors this season. Don't pick them in Fantasy at this point.
  • D-Backs name spring training invites

News: The D-Backs have announced the following non-roster invitations to spring training: pitchers Rodrigo Lopez, T.J. Beam, Josh Ellis, Barry Enright, Tommy Layne, Kyler Newby, Wes Roemer, Bryan Shaw and Matt Torra; catchers Carlos Corporan, Sean Coughlin and Konrad Schmidt; infielders Jeff Bailey and Mark Hallberg; and outfielders Collin Cowgill, Evan Frey and Drew Macias.
Analysis: None of these players figure to play a significant role for the D-Backs or any Fantasy leagues at this point. Ignore them on Draft Day.
  • D-Backs remove two from 40-man roster

News: The Arizona Diamondbacks outrighted reliever Kyler Newby and catcher Luke Carlin to the minor leagues Thursday.
Analysis: Newby and Carlin are nothing more than organizational depth at this point. Ignore them in all Fantasy leagues.
  • Newby going back to Triple-A

News: Arizona RHP Kyler Newby, recalled before Thursday's game against the Marlins from Double-A Mobile, will be sent back there Friday.
Analysis: Newby is merely organizational depth however and not worth owning in Fantasy at the moment.
  • Newby called up by D-Backs

News: The Diamondbacks have recalled two pitchers from Double-A Mobile to shore up a staff stunned by the loss of grieving reliever Scott Schoeneweis. Schoeneweis left the team and was placed on the bereavement list after his wife was found dead at their home Wednesday. The cause of death hasn't been determined. Right-hander Kyler Newby and left-hander Clay Zavada were recalled Thursday from Mobile. Right-hander Bryan Augenstein was optioned to Triple-A Reno.
Analysis: Newby posted a 3.38 ERA in 11 games for Mobile so far this season. He is merely organizational depth however and not worth owning in Fantasy at the moment.
  • Schlereth, six others sent down

News: The Diamondbacks sent seven players to minor-league camp on Monday -- INF Rusty Ryal, LHP Daniel Schlereth, SS Pedro Ciriaco, RHP Jose Marte, RHP Kyler Newby, LHP Clay Zavada and LHP Leyson Septimo.
Analysis: Schlereth was the organization's first-round pick in 2008, but he obviously needs more time to develop in the minors. He might deserve a roster spot in some deeper long-term keeper leagues. None of these other players figures to make a serious Fantasy impact any time soon.
