Marlins cut some top prospectsNews: The Marlins reassigned the following players to minor league camp Friday: right-handers Mike Wood and Jose Ceda, catcher Miguel Fermin, catcher Kyle Skipworth, third baseman Matt Dominguez and right fielder Michael Stanton. Also, outfielder Jai Miller was optioned to Triple-A New Orleans. Analysis: Ceda, acquired in the Kevin Gregg trade has closer potential, but he will have to display it in the minors right now. He needs better command. Skipworth was a first-round pick by the Marlins and is a future starting catcher in the majors. Dominguez and Stanton are elite prospects as well and must-stash options in long-term keeper formats. Miller has had years of time to arrive, but he looks like organizational depth now like the other players cut Friday.
Marlins hand out spring invitesNews: The following Marlins organizational players were extended spring training invitations: outfielders Scott Cousins, Alejandro De Aza, John Raynor and Michael Stanton; catchers Brad Davis and Miguel Fermin; right-handed pitchers Jose Ceda and Henry Owens; left-handed pitchers Aaron Thompson and Sean West. Analysis: Stanton and Raynor are solid outfield prospects, while Ceda and Owens could help the Marlins bullpen this year. Thompson and West could be factors in the rotation before the end of the season, perhaps as long shots out of spring training. Consider the prospects fliers in long-term keeper leagues and the others nothing more than organizational depth this season.
