    • Pirates send eight to minors

News: The Pirates reassigned 3B Pedro Alvarez, RP Jeff Sues and C Steve Lerud to Double-A Altoona and sent RP Ronald Uviedo to Class A Lynchburg on Tuesday, while SP Daniel McCutchen, SP Jimmy Barthmaier, SP Juan Mateo, 2B Shelby Ford have been reassigned and are likely heading to Triple-A Indianapolis.
Analysis: Alvarez, the No. 2 overall pick in 2008, along with McCutchen, are quality prospects and remains nice options in long-term keeper leagues. The others are all just organizational depth at the moment.

    • Ford makes impression with homer

News: Pirates 2B Shelby Ford, a non-roster infielder, had a pinch-hit, three-run home run to right field in Wednesday's spring training game against the Phillies. It was his only hit in three at-bats. "I went up there just looking to put a good at-bat together," said the 24-year-old Ford, who hit just 15 homers in three minor-league seasons. "When I hit one, it's really got to be up in the air for me to know it's gone."
Analysis: Ford has put together modest numbers in the minor leagues and is likely a long shot to make the major-league roster. Despite this home run, he should go ignored in all Fantasy leagues.
