      Pirates' Jordy Mercer: Avoids arbitration

Mercer and the Pirates agreed to terms on a one-year, $2.1 million deal Friday, avoiding arbitration, Bill Brink of the Pittsburgh Gazette reports. Mercer closed the 2015 season on a high note, as he saw increased time following Jung-Ho Kang's leg injury. He'll return in 2016 to compete for an everyday role in the Pittsburgh infield after playing exclusively at shortstop last season.

Pirates SS Jordy Mercer flashes rare power in win over Cubs

Pirates shortstop Jordy Mercer went 1 fo -3 Saturday with a three-run blast, his third home run of the season. He's now hitting .378 (14-for-37) over his last 10 games, and Mercer has taken full advantage of the regular playing time opened up for him by Jung Ho Kang's unfortunate injury.

Pirates SS Jordy Mercer goes 3 for 4 in Wednesday's win

Pirates shortstop Jordy Mercer went 3 for 4 with a run scored in Wednesday's win over the Rockies. Mercer was making his eighth start in a row for the Pirates and has produced four multi-hit performances during that span. It appears the Rockies will roll with him as their regular shortstop down the stretch, leaving Neil Walker, Josh Harrison, and Aramis Ramirez to battle for at-bats at second and third base following Jung-Ho Kang's season-ending knee injury.

Pirates shortstop Jordy Mercer goes 4 for 5 Monday

Pirates shortstop Jordy Mercer has eight hits in 19 at-bats since Jung-Ho Kang was injured Sept. 17. He collected his first four-hit game of the season Monday, going 4 for 5 with a pair of run-scoring doubles. Mercer's made several base-running gaffes recently but is proving more than capable as a starting shortstop down the stretch -- as he has the last couple years.

Pirates INF Jordy Mercer gets start at SS Friday

Pirates infielder Jordy Mercer will start at shortstop and bat seventh Friday against the Dodgers. Jung-Ho Kang is done for the year after undergoing knee surgery Thursday night, so Mercer will be thrust back into the primary role at short for the final weeks. Mercer has had a rough go of it at the dish since his late-August return from a leg injury, going 14-for-62 (.226 average) with just two extra-base hits (both doubles).

Pirates SS Jordy Mercer sitting out for Game 2 of doubleheader

Pirates shortstop Jordy Mercer is not in the lineup for Game 2 of Tuesday's doubleheader with the Cubs. Pedro Florimon will take over at shortstop in place of Mercer, who went 0-for-4 in Game 1 to drop his OPS below .600 for the first time since June 27. Mercer has just two extra-base hits (both doubles) since his return from a leg injury Aug. 23.

Pirates SS Jordy Mercer back in starting lineup

Pirates shortstop Jordy Mercer, who missed five weeks with a knee injury, returns to the starting lineup Monday as the team opens a series with the Marlins. Mercer has been supplanted by the solid play of rookie Jung Ho Kang, and his time as a starter may be limited. Mercer is hitting .241 in 81 games this season for Pittsburgh.

Pirates activate SS Jordy Mercer, put 1B Travis Ishikawa on DL

The Pirates have announced that they have activated shortstop Jordy Mercer off the disabled list and placed first baseman Travis Ishikawa on it with a back strain. Mercer has been out for five weeks with a knee injury. It remains to be seen how often he plays considering the emergence of Jung Ho Kang at that position. Ishikawa has played sparingly this season with just 12 hits in 59 at-bats over 39 games.

Return of 3B Harrison, SS Mercer creates issues for Piates

Clint Hurdle has declared that Pirates third baseman Josh Harrison and shortstop Jordy Mercer could be back at some point during the weekend series against San Francisco. Harrison is rehabbing after thumb surgery. He has been out for seven weeks. Mercer (knee strain) has been sidelined for a month. Their comebacks will create quite the logjam on the left side of the infield. Jung Ho Kang is the current shortstop with Aramis Ramirez at third. "I love the job that (Kang) has been able to do in Jordy's absence at short," Hurdle told the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review. "Jordy is a better defender at short, so you have to weigh the two. Kang is a very good defender at third. Ramirez has done a nice job. We've got all those pieces ... I think we have a very good idea of what we want to do and how we want to do it." Harrison could return to a super-utility role. Mercer would appear to be the odd-man out unless Hurdle prioritizes defense at that position.
