Rays' Jaff Decker: Signs minor league contract with Rays on Friday

Decker signed a minor league contract with the Rays on Friday that includes an invitation to spring training, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports. Decker profiles best as a Quadruple-A player, splitting time between Triple-A and the majors for the last three season. He most recently stopped in the Pirates organization, where he got 36 major league at-bats, but batted a meager .214. That being said, Decker is an on-base machine with some speed potential, shown by his OBP of .370 and 18 steals with Triple-A Indianapolis, which could help the left-hander compete for the fifth outfield spot for Tampa Bay.

Pirates' Jaff Decker: Wasn't tendered contract by Pirates

Decker wasn't tendered a contract by the Pirates on Wednesday. Decker was one the Pirates' September callups in 2015 and batted .214/.371/.321 primarily in a backup outfield role. The Pirates are pretty loaded in the outfield and should be for many years to come which led to Decker not receiving a contract tender.

He is in the starting lineup on Monday, playing first base and batting seventh for manager Clint Hurdle. Pirates' Jaff Decker (calf) goes hitless in rehab debut

Pirates outfielder Jaff Decker went 0 for 4 in the first game of his rehab assignment with Triple-A Indianapolis Thursday. Decker, who opened the season on the disabled list due to a calf injury, was able to play all nine innings in left field in his rehab debut. It's possible he won't need long on the disabled list, but with the outfielder not in line to fill a starting role on the major-league roster, the team could decide to keep him in Triple-A and on the disabled list for the time being.
