Rockies pitcher Tyler Chatwood throws three innings at Class A

Rockies pitcher Tyler Chatwood (elbow) made a three-inning appearance Thursday at Class A Asheville and gave up two runs. Chatwood tossed 42 pitches in what marked his fourth rehab outing as he works his way back from Tommy John surgery. Asheville ended up losing Tuesday and were eliminated from the South Atlantic League championship series, seemingly leaving Chatwood with no further opportunities to continue his rehab assignment in the minors. It's possible the Rockies will activate Chatwood from the 60-day DL and have him work out of the bullpen over the remaining two weeks of the season.

Rockies' Tyler Chatwood (elbow) recovering faster than expected

Rockies pitcher Tyler Chatwood is recovering from Tommy John surgery at a faster pace than expected, according to The Denver Post. Chatwood, 25, underwent Tommy John surgery for the second time in his career last July. It's still unknown, and maybe not even practical to speculate, whether Chatwood will return this season. However, it does appear progress is being made with his recovery. "I think I'm ahead of where they expected me to be, throwing-wise, so that's always good," Chatwood said. "I really don't want to set a schedule, but the plan is to come back this season." One good sign is the fact Chatwood was able to throw a 40-pitch bullpen on Sunday. Chatwood first had Tommy John surgery when he was 16 so the injury history is a concern. However, manager Walt Weiss said that while a return to the mound is too far out at this time, Chatwood is showing signs of being further along than what the club expected. "(W)ith his history and this being his second (surgery), we are going to take our time and make sure he's ready to go out and compete," Weiss said.
