Red Sox promote two, demote two in Wednesday moves

John Farrell announced Wednesday that the Red Sox have made a slew of moves, including the demotion of outfielder Jackie Bradley back to Triple-A Pawtucket a day after he had been brought up. Farrell also told WEEI that Anthony Varvaro has been designated for assignment and that fellow right-handers Dalier Hinojosa and Tommy Layne have been recalled from the minors. Bradley is still trying to display his potential at the big-league level after batting .198 in 384 at-bats with Boston a year ago. Varvaro punched his ticket back by giving up four runs on eight hits in his last 3 1/3 innings pitched.

Red Sox activate Koji Uehara; keep Ross over Layne in bullpen

The Red Sox optioned reliever Tommy Layne to Triple-A Pawtucket on Monday to clear a roster spot for closer Koji Uehara, who was activated off the 15-day disabled list. Uehara missed the first week of games due to a hamstring injury he suffered late in spring training. Manager John Farrell said the decision to demote Layne over Robbie Ross came down to Ross being available for Monday's game against the Nationals. Layne pitched four times since Opening Day, including Sunday against the Yankees.

Ross, Breslow, Layne, Wright make Red Sox's Opening Day roster

Red Sox pitchers Robbie Ross, Craig Breslow, Tommy Layne and Steven Wright all made the Opening Day roster. Ross, Breslow and Layne will definitely pitch out of the bullpen, but Wright might be needed for the rotation, if Joe Kelly (biceps) can't start April 11 against the Yankees. If Wright was optioned to the minors, he wouldn't be able to be recalled for that start. Unless a roster spot opens due to injury, a player must spend 10 days in the minors following a demotion.
