      Padres' Amarista, Middlebrooks hit solo HRs in loss to A's

      Padres shortstop Alexi Amarista and third baseman Will Middlebrooks provided the only offense for San Diego during a 10-2 loss Wednesday at Oakland. Amarista had a solo home run off Jesse Chavez in the sixth inning and Middlebrooks added a solo home run off Fernando Abad in the eighth inning. Middlebrooks hit eighth and Amarista hit ninth on Wednesday. Amarista, who has two home runs in 54 games, is doing well in June. He has hit safely in six straight games and is batting .333 (13 for 39) with one home run, three doubles, five RBI and five runs in 13 June games (10 starts). Middlebrooks, who has nine home runs in 64 games, isn't doing quite as well this month. He is batting .217 (10 for 46) with two home runs, six RBI, three runs and 14 strikeouts in 15 June games (12 starts).

      Padres shortstop Alexi Amarista had just seven RBI in May. He plated two runs in the second game of June, lifting his club past the Mets, 7-2, on Tuesday. Down one run, Amarista singled in a pair of runs in the second inning to give his club the lead and they never looked back. He finished 2 for 4 with a run scored, two RBI and two strikeouts. He is hitting .217 (5 for 23) with two walks, a double and three RBI over his last nine games played.

      Padres could be interested in Brewers SS Jean Segura

      After all the major roster changes Padres general manager A.J. Preller made this offseason, it will be interesting to see what, if any, mid-season moves he makes. Baseball Insider Jon Heyman is reporting that the Padres would be interested in Brewers shortstop Jean Segura if the team made him available, though that seems unlikely at this point. The Padres currently have Alexi Amarista installed as their regular shortstop, but he has not hit well this year and the team views him more as a utility-type player. And as we saw this past winter, with Preller, just about anything seems possible.
