Astros SP Mike Fiers strikes out three in loss Wednesday

Astros starting pitcher Mike Fiers went 6 2/3 innings Wednesday, giving up three earned runs on four hits and three walks while striking out three in a 6-5 loss to the Angels. The outing was Fiers' third consecutive quality start, as the right-hander continues his second half roll. Pitching to a 2.51 ERA in his last eight outings -- a span including a no-hitter -- Fiers has been one of the year's best trade deadline acquisitions. Fiers is next scheduled to take the mound Tuesday against the Mariners.

Astros SP Mike Fiers is impressive in loss to Athletics

Astros starting pitcher Mike Fiers hurled a quality start on Friday, as he struck out six batters while allowing two runs on five hits and a walk across six innings in a loss to the A's. Fiers had a nightmare relief outing in his debut with the Astros, but aside from that, he's been pretty reliable. In six starts since the relief appearance, Fiers has an ERA just above 2.00 with a WHIP just below 1.00, while averaging nearly a strikeout per inning. Those are fantastic numbers for any starter and if he maintains those numbers for his final couple of starts, he could reward risky fantasy owners to championship glory. Fiers will look to continue this stretch against the Angels next Wednesday.

Astros SP Mike Fiers fires no-hitter against Dodgers on Friday

New Astros pitcher Mike Fiers tossed his first-career no-hitter, as he shut down the Dodgers in the 3-0 victory on Friday. Fiers, who walked three and struck out 10, needed a whopping 134 pitches to complete the no-no, but he was spectacular in shutting down a very potent offense. Fiers' no-hitter is the first ever at Minute-Maid Park. He's the first Astros pitcher to throw a no-hitter since six pitchers combined for the feat back in 2003 against the Yankees. The last individual Astros pitcher to throw a no-hitter was Darryl Kile back in 1993. Fiers was making his third start--fourth overall performance--with the Astros, after he was acquired at last month's trade deadline. Fiers is now 1-0 with a 2.42 ERA in his tenure with the Astros.

Mike Fiers' Astros debut comes in relief effort Monday

Mike Fiers had to make his Astros debut a day earlier than expected, as he pitched in relief Monday against the Rangers after starter Lance McCullers failed to make it out of the first inning. While Fiers gave the Astros five innings in the 12-9 loss, he allowed six runs on seven hits and three walks. He had six strikeouts. "I was happy that Fiers came in and was able to get through the majority of that game by saving some of our bullpen pieces to live to start another day," manager A.J. Hinch said, per MLB.com. Dan Straily will be promoted from the minors to start Tuesday's game in place of Fiers.

Astros SP Mike Fiers to make team debut on Tuesday vs. Rangers

Newly-acquired pitcher Mike Fiers will make his Astros debut and start Tuesday's game against the Rangers, manager A.J. Hinch announced on Saturday. Fiers' next scheduled day would have been Monday, but Hinch said he wanted to give the right-hander an extra day of rest. "He's willing to do anything and he's raring to go," Hinch said, per MLB.com. "I wanted to see physically. He hasn't done a ton for a couple days ... He's had to move himself here and get himself ready, and some of the baseball for a pitcher has taken a little bit of a back seat for 48 hours." Fiers was acquired along with Carlos Gomez from the Brewers on Thursday. Fiers is 5-9 with a 3.87 ERA so far in 2015.
