Yankees' Jose Pirela: Lands on Padres after trade

Pirela was traded to Padres on Wednesday for minor-league pitcher Ron Herrera, Mark Feinsand of the New York Daily News reports. With the emergence of Rob Refsnyder and Dustin Ackley, Pirela was an expendable asset for the Yankees. The 25-year-old did make a few brief appearances with the Yankees in 2015, but it was his Triple-A Scranton numbers -- .325/.390/.433 with three home runs and 23 RBI this season -- that likely peaked the Padres interest. He could compete for at-bats with the club in 2016, but with Cory Spangenberg and Jedd Gyorko already mainstays at second base for San Diego, Pirela will likely bide his time in the minors until an inevitable injury occurs.

Yankees' Girardi taking day-by-day approach with middle infield

Yankees manager Joe Girardi isn't ready to commit to using a platoon situation at shortstop and second base, according to The Journal News. With Brendan Ryan off the disabled list, the Yankees could use Ryan at shortstop and Jose Pirela at second base when a left-hander is on the mound, and start Didi Gregorius at shortstop and Stephen Drew at second base against righties. "We'll see," Girardi said prior to Wednesday's game against the Nationals. "We'll go day by day. That's kind of how, to me, you have to approach the game. You have to see what's going on, when guys necessarily need a day off. We'll just go day by day."
