      Indians' Scott Downs has 'fire lit' in him to earn a bullpen spot

      Indians left-handed reliever Scott Downs, who will turn 39 on March 17, is in camp on his first minor-league contract of his 13-year career. He told on Wednesday he has lit a youthful fire in him to win a bullpen role in spring training. His fate may depend on whether manager Terry Francona wants to keep three lefties in the pen. "You don't know what's going to happen yet," Downs said. "It's so early in camp.       Scott Downs suffers first relief loss with new club

      Royals reliever Scott Downs suffered his first loss with his new club Friday night against the Red Sox in Boston. Downs permitted a solo home run to Jonny Gomes in the sixth inning, which proved to be the difference. He was charged with one run on one hit while striking out one over one-third of an inning in a 5-4 defeat. He owns a 6.18 ERA and a 1.55 WHIP over 27 2/3 innings of relief.
