      Dodgers acquire P Rudy Owens from Athletics

      The Dodgers have traded for pitcher Rudy Owens, formerly of the Athletics, reports Last season, Owens posted an ERA of 4.33 with Triple-A Oklahoma and an 8-5 record. The left-hander finished the spring with an ERA of 7.94, giving up five earned runs and one home run with one strikeout.

      Arnold Leon among five Athletics pitchers sent down

      The Athletics cut five pitchers on Sunday. RHP Arnold Leon was optioned to Triple-A. He allowed two hits in four shutout innings this spring, and manager Bob Melvin said the decision to send him down was a tough one. RHP Raul Alcantara, who hasn't played as he continues to recover from arm surgery, was optioned to Double-A. Three pitchers were reassigned to minor league camp: RHP Angel Castro (3.00 ERA in three spring innings) and LHPs Jim Fuller (3.38 ERA) and Rudy Owens (9.00 ERA).

      Astros pitcher Rudy Owens was hit hard in his first big-league start and as pegged with the loss Friday night against the Mariners in Seattle.Owens surrendered a two-run home run to Willie Bloomquist in the sixth, which proved to be the biggest blow. He permitted five runs on nine hits and two walks while striking out one in 5 2/3 innings of a 6-1 defeat.Owens was optioned back down to Triple-A Oklahoma City. He went 2-3 with a 6.05 ERA in 41 2/3 innings at Triple-A.

      Struggling Rudy Owens starting for Astros on Friday

      Left-handed pitcher Rudy Owens has been called up by the Astros from Triple-A Oklahoma City to make the Friday night start in Seattle. Right-hander Josh Zeid has been demoted to the same team. Owens has not distinguished himself with the RedHawks this season. He is 2-3 with a 6.05 ERA and has surrendered 51 hits in 41 2/3 innings. He has yielded just just eight walks, but gave up eight earned runs in three innings in his last start.

      Astros pitching prospect Rudy Owens is expected to be sidelined 4-5 months due to a stress fracture in his left foot, the Houston Chronicle reported Friday. Owen, who is scheduled to undergo surgery on his foot next Monday in Houston, was 0-3 with a 3.71 ERA in 17 innings with Triple-A Oklahoma City.
