Marlins SP Jarred Cosart picks up win after impressive outing

Marlins starting pitcher Jarred Cosart (2-4) hurled a quality start on Thursday, allowing two runs on three hits and three walks with four strikeouts across six innings in a 6-4 win over the Nationals. Cosart has now allowed just three runs on 12 hits over his last three starts. The young righty has a lot of potential and he shows flashes of brilliance with the occasional blowup. What makes him iffy for fantasy purposes are that he doesn't go deep into games and he also struggles to strike batters out. Cosart averages just 77 pitches per start and he has just 41 strikeouts in 61 innings this season. It may be the case of sparing the 25-year-olds arm and he should be a more reliable fantasy player next season. Cosart might be a sneaky streamer play in his next start when he hosts the Phillies next Thursday.

Marlins SP Jarred Cosart clobbered, then demoted

Marlins right-hander Jarred Cosart might remember his outing Saturday at Wrigley Field for quite some time - and for all the wrong reasons. His first start since returning from a hand injury was a disaster. He was mashed for seven earned runs on four hits and three walks in 1 2/3 innings before his merciful removal. When the dust had cleared, his ERA had soared to a season-high 5.36. And after the game, he was demoted to Triple-A New Orleans. "We're going to ... let him work on some things that he needs to refine to get himself back to being the Jarred Cosart that we know he is - both mentally and physically - and get him right so he can come back here and use his pitches," Dan Jennings told MLB.com. Cosart allowed a two-run homer to Kris Bryant in the first inning Saturday and never recovered. Two walks and two singles in the third led to a grand slam by Bryant and knocked him out of the game. He has allowed 20 earned runs in his last 20 innings pitched.
