Orioles' Vance Worley: Signs deal to avoid arbitration

Worley signed a one-year, $2.6 million contract with the Orioles on Wednesday to avoid arbitration, Jon Heyman of CBS Sports reports. The Ray Searage magic ran out for Worley in 2015, as he turned in a 4.81 ERA and 1.65 WHIP in eight starts for Pittsburgh to begin the year and was promptly removed from the rotation. He spent the rest of the season between Triple-A and the bullpen, and the Orioles ultimately grabbed him off waivers in October, giving them an insurance policy for the rotation heading into spring training.

Pirates' Vance Worley: Claimed off waivers Tuesday

Worley was claimed off waivers by the Orioles on Tuesday. In 110 innings with the Pirates during 2014, Worley was masterful, recording a 2.85 ERA and 1.29 WHIP to go along with a 79:22 K:BB. 2015 was...a different story. Worley began the season in the starting rotation due to an injury to Charlie Morton, but found his way onto Triple-A Indianapolis midway through the season. He could be an interesting name to follow as the Orioles only had one pitcher throw 100+ innings and post an ERA under 4.00 in 2015, but no official announcement regarding his usage will come until later in the season.

Pirates' Vance Worley struggles in emergency start on Saturday

Thrown into the start at the last minute, Pirates right-hander Vance Worley gave up five runs (four earned) on seven hits over four innings on Saturday. Worley needed 80 pitches to get through the fourth, as he walked one and struck out four in the 8-5 loss to the Brewers. Worley (3-5) was given an early 3-0 lead in the first inning, but he was unable to hang on to it. He gave up a pair of runs in the second and one in the third before Jonathan Lucroy took him deep for a two-run home run in the fourth. This was Worley's first start in roughly two months, but he had given up runs in three of his last four relief appearances. His ERA rose to 3.71 following Saturday's outing. "We gave Worley a yell 25 minutes before game time, and he poured everything he had into the outing," manager Clint Hurdle said following the game, per "He battled. He's a tough man. He was all-in with the effort, and that's one of the many things we like about him."
