  • Josh Tomlin: Option declined

Tomlin (neck) had his team option declined by Atlanta on Saturday. Tomlin will be paid a $250,000 buyout rather than a $1.25 million salary. The 37-year-old struggled to a 6.57 ERA in 49.1 innings of relief this season and could struggle to earn a major-league deal over the winter given his age and recent performance.

  • Braves' Josh Tomlin: Unlikely to return this weekend

Atlanta manager Brian Snitker said Wednesday that Tomlin (neck) isn't expected to be activated from the injured list before the end of the regular season, Mark Bowman of MLB.com reports. Though Tomlin tossed a simulated game Wednesday to seemingly put him in position for a return from the IL this weekend, Snitker indicated the right-hander is merely in the process of ramping up in case Atlanta needs an extra arm out of the bullpen. At this point, Tomlin doesn't look to be in consideration for a spot on Atlanta's postseason roster, should the team beat out Philadelphia for the division title. Before landing on the IL on Aug. 31, Tomlin had surrendered 10 earned runs in 4.1 innings over his final two relief appearances.

  • Braves' Josh Tomlin: Tosses sim game

Tomlin (neck) completed a simulated game Wednesday and could be reinstated from the 10-day injured list this weekend, Mark Bowman of MLB.com reports. After making a three-inning rehab appearance for Triple-A Gwinnett on Sept. 17, Tomlin has rejoined the big club to continue his ramp-up program. Assuming his neck checks out fine following Wednesday's throwing session, Tomlin may get the opportunity to pitch out of the bullpen in Atlanta's final series of the regular season versus the Mets in what could amount to a de facto audition for the playoff roster.

  • Braves' Josh Tomlin: Rehab assignment on tap

Tomlin (neck) will begin a rehab assignment with Triple-A Gwinnett on Friday. Tomlin has been on the injured list with a neck strain since Aug. 31. Given the length of his absence, the club will likely want him to get two or three outings in with Gwinnett before he rejoins the major-league roster. With that in mind, he could be activated toward the end of next week.

  • Braves' Josh Tomlin: Out with neck strain

Tomlin was placed on the 10-day injured list Tuesday with a neck strain. Tomlin hasn't pitched in a game since Aug. 18, so it's unclear how exactly he picked up the injury. Edgar Santana was recalled from Triple-A Gwinnett in a corresponding move.

  • Braves' Josh Tomlin: Earns win in relief

Tomlin (4-0) earned the win in relief Saturday against Philadelphia despite giving up one run on three hits while striking out one across 1.2 innings. Tomlin entered to pitch in the fifth inning after Drew Smyly left the game with left knee pain, and while he was unable to toss a scoreless inning, he did enough to record his fourth win of the campaign. The veteran has made just four appearances this month and hasn't looked sharp, allowing runs in three of those outings. He has given up eight runs while posting a 4:0 K:BB through five innings in that span.

  • Braves' Josh Tomlin: Stumbles into break

Tomlin has given up seven earned runs over his last two appearances and carries a 5.94 ERA and 1.49 WHIP through 36.1 innings on the season into the All-Star break. Rough patches are nothing new for the 36-year-old, who was scored upon in eight of nine outings between April 18 and May 16 earlier this season. Tomlin's role on the staff is to soak up low-leverage innings in long relief, and as a result his fantasy value is almost nil even when he is pitching well.

  • Braves' Josh Tomlin: Earns win Thursday

Tomlin (3-0) struck out one in 1.1 perfect innings to earn the win against the Nationals on Thursday. Tomlin was brought in to record the final out of the sixth inning, and Atlanta scored four runs in the bottom half of the frame to put him in line for the win. The righty has posted a 5.40 ERA and 1.50 WHIP in 26.2 innings across 19 relief appearances to begin the year.

  • Braves' Josh Tomlin: Picks up second win

Tomlin (2-0) allowed three hits and no walks in 1.1 relief innings as he earned the win against the Cubs on Friday. Tomlin struggled by giving up three runs in 1.1 innings against the Marlins on Tuesday, but he returned to form Friday and picked up his second win of 2021. The right-hander has now posted a 3.86 ERA and 1.43 WHIP in seven innings to begin the season.

  • Braves' Josh Tomlin: Set for bullpen role

Tomlin has posted a 2.25 ERA and 5:0 K:BB through four Grapefruit League innings this spring. The veteran right-hander has been a solid long reliever/swingman for Atlanta over the last two years with a 4.08 ERA and 1.15 WHIP, and Tomin could be leaned on fairly heavily in the early going as the team looks to manage the workload of the rotation. It's not a particularly fantasy-friendly role, but he might stumble into a win or two with a potent offense at his back.

  • Braves' Josh Tomlin: Remains in Atlanta

Tomlin signed a one-year, $1 million contract with Atlanta on Wednesday, Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic reports. Tomlin spent the past two seasons in Atlanta, and he'll remain with the team for at least one more season after recording a 4.76 ERA and 36:8 K:BB over 39.2 innings during the abbreviated 2020 campaign. He worked as both a starter and reliever last year, but the 36-year-old should work primarily out of the bullpen in 2021. The deal includes a $1.25 million club option with a $250,000 buyout for 2022.

  • Braves' Josh Tomlin: Working in relief

Tomlin made his most recent appearance for the Braves out of the bullpen, giving up two runs over 2.2 innings in a Sept. 16 outing in Baltimore. The recent returns of Cole Hamels and Max Fried from the injured list appear to have at least temporarily bumped Tomlin from the rotation, as the Braves have opted to keep younger arms in Kyle Wright and Huascar Ynoa in starting roles over him. Atlanta will need to add another starter to the rotation Wednesday versus Miami, so Tomlin could be a candidate to pitch that day if he's not needed in relief Monday or Tuesday.

  • Braves' Josh Tomlin: Gives up five runs Friday

Tomlin allowed five runs on seven hits and one walk while striking out two over four innings in Friday's loss to the Nationals. He didn't factor into the decision. Tomlin was roughed up early against the Nationals as he allowed three runs in the first inning before giving up two more in the third. However, a strong offensive showing from Atlanta allowed him to settle for the no-decision. With Max Fried (back) and Cole Hamels (triceps) expected to return soon, it's unclear when Tomlin could make another start.

  • Braves' Josh Tomlin: Picks up win Sunday

Tomlin (2-2) allowed one run on three hits and no walks while striking out two over six innings to earn the win Sunday against the Nationals. Tomlin had been charged with losses in both of his past two outings, but he received an extra day of rest prior to Sunday's start. He responded with his longest appearance of the season, and he only allowed three baserunners over the first six innings of the contest. The right-hander now has a 3.77 ERA and 26:6 K:BB over 28.2 innings this year. His next start should be on the road Friday against the Nationals.

  • Braves' Josh Tomlin: Start pushed to Sunday

Tomlin will have his start pushed to Sunday against the Nationals, 680 The Fan Atlanta reports. The veteran right-hander lined up to start Game 2 of Friday's twin bill, but he'll receive some extra rest with Huascar Ynoa receiving the start instead. Tomlin has struggled in his past two outings, allowing eight runs (seven earned) on 11 hits with six strikeouts and two walks over 7.1 innings.

  • Braves' Josh Tomlin: Hurt by long ball

Tomlin (1-2) took the loss Saturday against the Phillies after surrendering four runs (three earned) on five hits with two walks and one strikeout over 4.1 innings. The veteran right-hander got through four frames with only one run allowed on a sacrifice fly, but he struggled in the fifth inning and was pulled after giving up a three-run homer to Rhys Hoskins. Tomlin has a 4.37 ERA, 1.28 WHIP and 24:6 K:BB over 22.2 innings, and he lines up to pitch against the Nationals next weekend.

  • Braves' Josh Tomlin: Lasts three innings in loss

Tomlin (1-1) gave up four runs on six hits and struck out five over three innings in a loss to Philadelphia on Sunday. Tomlin gave up three homers to account for all four runs in the appearance, and he needed 61 pitches (38 strikes) to complete the short outing. The 35-year-old began the year as a reliever, but has been forced into starting duties after injuries ravaged Atlanta's rotation. He has a 3.93 ERA and 1.20 WHIP with 23 strikeouts across 18.1 innings this season. His next start is expected to be Saturday in a rematch in Philadelphia.

  • Braves' Josh Tomlin: Getting another start

Tomlin is slated to start Sunday's game against the Phillies. Just over 40 percent of the way into their season, the Braves have just one man left standing (Max Fried) from their Opening Day rotation. As a result, Tomlin should keep picking up starts so long as his performance continues to warrant regular starts. After thriving in long relief to begin the season, Tomlin fared respectably in his first start in Tuesday's loss to Washington, working four innings (51 pitches) and giving up two runs on six hits and a walk while striking out two. He'll likely push his pitch count up to the 60-to-75 range Sunday.

  • Braves' Josh Tomlin: Solid effort in no-decision

Tomlin didn't factor into the decision in Tuesday's 8-5 loss to the Nationals, allowing two runs on six hits and a walk over four innings. He struck out two. The veteran swing man was making his first start of the season and did his part, exiting the game after 51 pitches (36 strikes) with Atlanta up 5-2. However, the bullpen quickly allowed things to deteriorate. It's not clear whether the team plans to keep Tomlin -- who has a sparkling 2.35 ERA, 1.04 WHIP and 18:4 K:BB through 15.1 innings -- in the rotation for now or move him back into long relief in support of some younger arms, but if he does stay on schedule, he'd next take the mound Sunday, at home against the Phillies.

  • Braves' Josh Tomlin: Gets win in relief

Tomlin (1-0) struck out three over 2.1 perfect innings of relief Saturday to record the win in a 7-1 victory over the Mets. Touki Toussaint got the start but only lasted four innings, allowing Tomlin to get credit for the win with a dominant performance out of the bullpen. The veteran right-hander has yet to give up a run this season over three appearances and 5.2 innings, posting an 8:0 K:BB, and with Atlanta now featuring an incredibly young and inexperienced rotation to go with an explosive offense, Tomlin could end up as one of the most valuable long men in baseball from a fantasy perspective.
