The St. Louis Cardinals signed right-hander Seth Blair, a supplemental pick in the amateur draft and the 46th player taken overall. The 21-year-old Blair, of Rock Falls, Ill., signed Friday at Busch Stadium and will report to Class A Batavia in the New York-Penn League.
Blair was 12-1 with a 3.64 ERA in 18 starts as a junior at Arizona State this season with 108 strikeouts in 106 1/3 innings. Mike Leake was able go right to the majors this season after being drafted out of Arizona State, so Blair could be a candidate to move quickly. Consider him a long-term keeper-league stashee. We tend to doubt he can appear in the majors in 2011, but Leake surprised us by doing it.
