    Mariners designate Chance Ruffin for assignment

    The Mariners designated pitcher Chance Ruffin for assignment Wednesday, clearing a 40-man roster spot for outfielder Franklin Gutierrez. Ruffin gave up nine earned runs in 9 2/3 innings with the Mariners last season while going 5-6 with a 3.91 ERA, 1.23 WHIP and 82:29 K:BB ratio in 112 2/3 innings between Double-A Jackson and Triple-A Tacoma.

    Mariners add three to roster

    The Mariners officially added pitchers Hector Noesi and Chance Ruffin and infielder Carlos Triunfel to the roster from the minors Tuesday, the Seattle Times reports. The team also added coach Howard Johnson.

    Reliever Chance Ruffin being converted into a starting pitcher

    The Mariners are converting reliever Chance Ruffin into a starting pitcher, according to the team's Triple-A affiliate's radio announcer Mike Curto, who notes that Ruffin hasn't pitched as a starter since his sophomore year at the University of Texas. Ruffin allowed three earned runs in three innings of work this spring and may open the season at the Double-A level.

    Ruffin officially a Mariner

    RP Chance Ruffin was officially named as the player to be named later in the trade that sent SP Doug Fister and RP David Pauley to the Tigers. In addition to Ruffin, Seattle received SP Charlie Furbush, OF Casper Wells and minor league 3B Francisco Martinez. Ruffin will join the Mariners' bullpen for Wednesday's game against the Blue Jays, and in a corresponding move, RP Aaron Laffey was designated for assignment.
