Mariners' Evan Scribner: Traded to Mariners

Scribner was traded to the Mariners on Tuesday for Trey Cochran-Gill, Jeff Passan of Yahoo! Sports reports. The results for Scribner in recent seasons have not been as good as the peripherals would suggest. He turned in a 4.35 ERA in 54 appearances with the A's in 2015, but his xFIP was more than 150 points lower thanks to a 26.9 percent strikeout rate and minuscule 1.7 percent walk rate. While Scribner is not much of a groundball pitcher (career 37.7% GB%), his inflated HR/FB numbers from the past two years seem likely to improve given his pre-2014 marks and the move to another pitcher's park in Seattle.

Athletics' Evan Scribner earns setup role

Athletics pitcher Evan Scribner has found himself in more high-pressure situations lately, including Tuesday, when he struck out Mike Trout, Albert Pujols and David Freese in order to close out his team's 6-2 win over the Angels. "He's moved up to that, right now, that eighth-inning role, the setup-type role and he deserves to," A's manager Bob Melvin said Wednesday, MLB.com reports.. "The slider/cutter has been a terrific pitch for him. His fastball and his curveball have been more up and down, now he has a pitch to go side to side. We saw that there's some hitters taking some funky swings at it. He's pitching with a lot of confidence on top of it." Scribner added a cutter to his arsenal this offseason and has seen the new pitch pay off this April. "I think the added pitch is mainly the biggest thing I'd say," Scribner said. "Couple other things go into it. Mainly getting an opportunity to stay and play here. Knowing that they -- the out of options thing -- they can't send me back and forth [to the Minor Leagues] like they have been doing. That helps me out." Scribner allowed one hit while recoring two outs Wednesday and now owns a 1.38 ERA and 14:1 K:BB ratio in 13 innings.

A's RP Evan Scribner starting to earn more confidence from Melvin

Athletics pitcher Evan Scribner is slowly starting to see his role in the A's bullpen expand. While Scribner started the season as a long reliever, manager Bob Melvin said he's starting to see a more valuable role for Scribner, reports MLB.com. "Scribs has put himself in a position not just to be more or less a long guy like we've seen in the past," Melvin said. Scribner has pitched 7 2/3 innings and produced a 2.35 ERA this season and Melvin said he may consider him for a set-up role. "With [Dan] Otero being the primary right-handed setup guy, we're a little bit short one guy than we've had in the past," Melvin said. "With [Tyler] Clippard in the closer role now, we've usually used two righties, and [Ryan] Cook was one of those guys, so it could be Scribner."

Out of options, Evan Scribner could have multi-inning role with A's

Athletics pitcher Evan Scribner is out of options this spring and would likely be claimed if placed on waivers, but he's not worried about a potential move, the Bay Area News Group reports. "I've got a basic plan," Scribner said. "Do good this spring and I'll be around. So I'm just focused on how I'm pitching and not on where I might wind up. It's made it easier for me this spring. Whatever will happen will happen." Scribner tossed 3 1/3 scoreless innings and has pitched multiple innings in three of his last four appearances. "The way they're using me, I'd guess they are thinking of me as an extended reliever, throwing multiple innings," he said. "And that's fine with me." Scribner has allowed four earned runs in 11 2/3 innings this spring while racking up 16 strikeouts and three walks.
