Rangers' Tom Wilhelmsen: Traded to Rangers

Wilhelmsen was traded from the Mariners to the Rangers on Monday. Wilhelmsen posted a strong season for the Mariners in 2015, posting a 3.19 ERA and 1.37 WHIP with 60 strikeouts in 62 frames. His biggest letdown was his 29 walks, and it's a number he'll look to improve on as he battles for a back end spot in the Rangers bullpen in 2016.

RP Tom Wilhelmsen not available for Mariners on Thursday

Mariners reliever Tom Wilhelmsen will be unavailable for the Mariners on Thursday, Greg Johns of reports. After throwing 32 pitches in his first blown save of the season Wednesday, the Mariners will need to look elsewhere if a save situation were to come up. Wilhelmsen should be available again in the next couple days, but Carson Smith seems the likely option to receive the save opportunity Thursday should it present itself.

Mariners RP Tom Wilhelmsen blows save Wednesday

Mariners reliever Tom Wilhelmsen was charged with his first blown save of the season Wednesday after giving up a ninth-inning run on two hits and two walks in Kansas City. Wilhelmsen has been far from excellent out of the Seattle bullpen this year, but he'd been unbeaten in a dozen save chances leading into Wednesday's action. Still, like the Mariners' closer to start the year, Fernando Rodney, Wilhelmsen puts too many runners on base, as evidenced by his ugly 1.41 WHIP. He'll remain the closer in Seattle to end the season, but it'd be a surprise to see him still occupying the role on Opening Day next year.

Tom Wilhelmsen continues to thrive as Mariners closer

Mariners reliever Tom Wilhelmsen allowed one hit in a clean ninth inning to pick up his 11th save in a 3-1 win over the Angels on Wednesday. Wilhelmsen has been brilliant since capturing the closer's role, as he's converted nine saves in his last 10 outings. The righty has also gone 12 straight outings without allowing a run. If he were the closer all season long, the Mariners may not be so far out of the playoff race. It remains to be seen if he'll keep the role next season, but he's putting together a nice resume and will close the remainder of this year.

Mariners RP Tom Wilhelmsen picks up third save

The Mariners' closer situation has been in flux all season, and with the release of former closer Fernando Rodney, it looks as if Seattle will turn to Tom Wilhelmsen to finish out games. Wilhelmsen picked up his third save of the season Sunday, quashing a White Sox rally to help Seattle avoid a sweep. Wilhelmsen served as Seattle's closer in the 2012-13 seasons, combining for 54 saves, so he's no stranger to high-pressure situations. Sunday, Wilhelmsen retired the Sox in order on just 11 pitches to earn his first save since Aug. 2.
