Orioles RP Brad Brach coughs up game-winning run to Blue Jays

Orioles reliever Brad Brach (5-3) surrendered two hits and an earned run over an inning in Monday's 4-3 loss to the Blue Jays. Brach came on in the ninth to preserve a 3-3 tie and surrendered a fielder's choice ground out to Justin Smoak that plated Dalton Pompey. The 29-year-old reliever had successfully converted all 13 hold situations he'd encountered during the 2015 campaign prior to Monday's contest, and had also posted scoreless appearances in eight out of his previous nine trips to the mound. Monday's hiccup notwithstanding, Brach has turned in generally solid relief work for the Orioles, particularly post-All-Star break. He has posted a sparkling 1.63 ERA in the second half of the season.

Orioles relief pitcher Brad Brach earns first save of the year

Orioles relief pitcher Brad Brach worked a perfect 1 1/3 innings in Baltimore's 4-0 win over the Rays, picking up his first save of the season. Brach came on in relief for starter Miguel Gonzalez with two outs in the eighth, needing to get out of a jam, which he did, forcing forcing Steven Souza to foul out to the catcher. "It's a game of inches. It is. I say it all the time. A ball hits a catwalk by a foot last night. A foot or two more is in the stands, and who knows what happens?" Showalter said. "But Brad was a big part of what we did last year, and he's starting to get back in sync a little bit." Brach needed just 11 pitches in the ninth to finish things off. "He had some life on that ball. He's got such a devastating changeup," catcher Caleb Joseph said. "That pitch has really come around for him. He's got a lot of deception, and he came in and did a good job filling in for Miggy and then closing it out in the ninth. He got a big out there with Souza. He's done a great job for us since we got here, and we are going to count on him." Brach lowered his ERA to 4.26 in 12 2/3 innings of work.
