The Tigers placed catcher Alex Avila on the 15-day disabled list Saturday, retroactive to May 7, due to a loose body in his left knee, the team announced. Avila was scratched from Friday's lineup but was said to be dealing with a forearm contusion. He has hit .200/.342/.317 with two home runs and eight RBI while serving as the team's primary catcher against right-handed pitchers. Avila and the Tigers will not decide on a course of action until getting a second opinion on his MRI, but he appears headed for athroscopic knee surgery, which could keep him out through the All-Star break, reports. "We don't know any type of timetable really," Avila said. "We're trying to basically figure out the course of action right now. But my expectation and my hope would be to be back and ready to go, good as new, for the second half. That would be my hope and I think that's a pretty realistic possibility." The Tigers will recall catcher Bryan Holaday before Saturday's game to replace Avila on the active roster. He has hit .230/.278/.328 with one home run and nine RBI in 61 at-bats with Triple-A Toledo. Unlike Avila, Holaday bats right-handed, as does catcher James McCann, who could be in for regular playing time against righties with Avila sidelined.
