      Alex White no longer in running for rotation spot, among Astros cuts

      The Astros announced Friday they sent seven players to minor-league camp, including starting pitcher Alex White, who was in the running for the fifth spot in the rotation. White was technically optioned to the minors, while the remaining six were reassigned. Also sent to minor-league camp were Colin Moran, Jason Stoffel, Nolan Fontana, Preston Tucker, Matt Duffy and Roberto Pena.

      Astros RHP Jason Stoffel dealing with right arm injury

      Astros right-handed pitcher Jason Stoffel has a sore throwing arm and has been held out by the organization, according to the Houston Chronicle. Stoffel is able to play catch through the injury, though. It isn't considered to be a major injury. Stoffel went 5-4 with a 3.20 ERA at Triple-A Oklahoma City a year ago.

      Mark Appel, Carlos Correa among Astros' non-roster invites

      The Astros announced Tuesday they will have 17 non-roster invites for spring training, including starting pitcher prospect Mark Appel and shortstop prospect Carlos Correa. Appel was the No. 1 pick in the 2013 MLB draft, while Correa was the No. 1 pick in 2012. The other non-roster invitees are outfielder Andrew Aplin, pitcher Darin Downs, infielder Matt Duffy, catcher Luis Flores, infielder Nolan Fontana, catcher Tyler Heineman, pitcher Jordan Jankowski, infielder Dan Johnson, infielder Colin Moran, catcher Roberto Pena, infielder Gregorio Petit, pitcher Brady Rodgers, infielder Joe Sclafani, pitcher Jason Stoffel and outfielder Preston Tucker. Correa (No. 1) and Appel (No. 2) are considered the team's top two prospects, according to Baseball America. Moran (No. 7) is also considered a top-10 prospect.

      The Astros announced Sunday they assigned pitchers Jake Buchanan, Paul Clemens, Bobby Doran, Jason Stoffel and Nick Tropeano, infielders Jonathan Meyer and Ronald Torreyes and outfielders Leo Heras and Preston Tucker to minor-league camp.

      Carlos Correa, Mark Appel headline Astros' spring invitees

      The Astros invited 20 non-roster minor-leaguers to spring training Tuesday, including infielder Carlos Correa and pitcher Mark Appel, the team announced. The team's other invitees include pitchers Jake Buchanan, Rhiner Cruz, Jorge De Leon, Bobby Doran, Mike Foltynewicz, Jason Stoffel and Nick Tropeano; catchers Rene Garcia, Tyler Heineman and Carlos Perez; infielders Japhet Amador, Jonathan Meyer and Ronald Torreyes; and outfielders Delino DeShields, Leo Heras, J.D. Martinez, George Springer and Preston Tucker. Correa, 19, was the No. 1 overall pick in the 2012 amateur draft. He hit .320/.405/.467 with nine home runs, 86 RBI and 10 stolen bases in 450 at-bats with Class A Quad Cities last season. Appel, 22, was the No. 1 overall pick in the 2013 amateur draft. He went 3-1 with a 3.79 ERA, 1.18 WHIP and 33:9 K:BB ratio in 38 innings over 10 starts between low Class A Tri-City and Class A Quad Cities.

      Stoffel becomes property of Astros

      The Giants traded right-handed relievers Henry Sosa and Jason Stoffel to the Astros on Tuesday for infielder Jeff Keppinger.
