Braves' Ryan Lavarnway: Signs a minor league contract with Braves on Tuesday

Lavarnway signed a minor league contract with the Braves Tuesday. With the Braves resigning A.J. Pierzynski, this signing likely took place to keep Lavarnway around as organizational depth in case Pierzynski or Cristian Bethancourt get hurt. The 28-year-old batted .191 with two homers and six RBI in 106 plate appearances with Baltimore and Atlanta last season.

Braves catcher Christian Bethancourt not in Saturday's lineup

Braves catcher Christian Bethancourt is not in the lineup Saturday. He tried to play through a thumb injury Thursday, but he was only able to make it through two at-bats before being removed. It's likely the 24-year-old will not return the rest of the season, meaning Ryan Lavarnway will continue to get the starts behind the plate.

Braves reserve catcher Ryan Lavarnway goes yard on Saturday

Braves catcher Ryan Lavarnway went deep for the first time in nearly two years, as he hit his first home run of the season in Saturday's 3-2 loss to the Rockies. Lavarnway knocked a solo shot in the third inning to give the Braves an early 2-0 advantage, though they wouldn't be able to hold the lead. Lavarnway's last home run came in September 2013 as a member of the Red Sox. The once-highly regarded prospect has failed to live up to expectations in his career, and this year he has eight hits in 45 at-bats between the Braves and Orioles.
