Tigers RP Alex Wilson blows save against Royals

Tigers relief pitcher Alex Wilson allowed one run on two hits while retiring just one batter to take a blown save against the Royals on Friday night. Wilson was asked to try and finish off the Royals with two outs in the ninth because starter Justin Verlander was at 114 pitches, and has never had much success against the due hitter Salvador Perez (21-for-44 against Verlander in his career). Two pitches later, Perez had launched his 20th home run, and the game was tied.

Tigers RP Bruce Rondon gains edge in battle for closer role

Brad Ausmus appears to be leaning toward Bruce Rondon as the closer for the Tigers moving forward. Rondon has earned two saves since Saturday, but that is partially due to the absence of Alex Wilson, who is dealing with shoulder fatigue. The former had been considered the closer of the future, but had failed to take hold of the job. Then Tommy John surgery sidelined him throughout 2014. "The way Rondon has been pitching, I may end up giving him some more opportunities," Ausmus told the Detroit Free Press. "Doesn't mean all of them. Rondon is obviously going to need days (off) as well, and Wilson would get opportunities then." Wilson owns a 1.72 ERA in 42 games this season with 33 strikeouts in 57 2/3 innings.

Tigers RP Alex Wilson nails down second save Wednesday

It's so far, so good for Alex Wilson as the closer for the Tigers. He's converted both save opportunities since apparently landing the job. The latest success was Wednesday night, when he arrived on the scene with two outs in the ninth and induced Alex Rios to fly out after allowing a single. Wilson has yet to be officially named the closer as Brad Ausmus has indicated that Blaine Hardy, who started the ninth, could be used in save situations against left-handed batters.
