Marlins SP David Phelps mashed by Mets

When your mound opponent is Mets stud Matt Harvey, you must be on top of your game. Marlins starter David Phelps was on the bottom of his game Wednesday. Needless to say, he lost. And that makes it five straight decisions. Phelps (4-8) was blasted for seven runs on eight hits in 4 1/3 innings. He walked three and struck out three. He was doomed by two rotten frames. An RBI single by Yoenis Cespedes and two-run double by Lucas Duda keyed a four-run third and three-run homer by Juan Uribe did all the damage in the fifth. Phelps had been victim of poor run support recently. But his performance Wednesday was easily his worst since June 10.

Marlins' David Phelps allows three runs in no-decision Friday

Marlins pitcher David Phelps had a decent start against the Padres on Friday, but was left with a no-decision in the extra-innings 8-3 loss. Phelps allowed three runs on seven hits over five innings. He walked one and struck out two, and left the game with the score tied 3-3. Phelps was given an early 2-0 lead in the first, but he allowed a run to score in the third and two more in the fourth to give the Padres the 3-2 advantage. He did not factor in the decision, as the Marlins were able to push across the tying run in the ninth before losing in 11 innings. Phelps made five appearances--four starts--in July. He went 0-3 with a 3.12 ERA.

Marlins' David Phelps gets tough-luck loss in return to rotation

Marlins right-hander David Phelps pitched very well against the Reds on Friday night. Phelps allowed one run on five hits over six innings. He walked one and struck out four. He was left with the loss, however, as the Marlins were unable to provide any run support in the 1-0 loss. The only run Phelps surrendered came on a solo home run by Jay Bruce in the second inning. Otherwise, Phelps was quite strong in this outing, as Bruce was the only Reds base runner to touch third base on Friday. This was Phelps' first start since June 21 (against these same Reds), as he was moved to the bullpen following that outing. His ERA dropped to 3.86 following Friday's performance.

Phelps began the season in the bullpen before joining the rotation in mid-April. He went 4-4 with a 3.84 ERA in 13 starts.
