Brewers' Will Middlebrooks: Signs minor league contract with Brewers

Middlebrooks signed a minor league contract with the Brewers on Tuesday, Dennis Lin of the San Diego Union-Tribune reports. Middlebrooks was hoping to get back to his 2012 breakout season when he signed with the Padres last winter, but he was unable to do so and spent another season middling between Triple-A and the majors. However, Middlebrooks does have a fair amount of major league experience and could compete for the Brewers starting third base job due to the relative lack of experience among the other options Milwaukee has.

      Will Middlebrooks: Non-tendered by Padres

The Padres declined to tender Middlebrooks a contract for 2016. Middlebrooks' fresh start in San Diego quickly turned sour, as he struggled to a .212/.241/.361 line before being optioned down in July. The Padres decided to cut their losses and move on, and Middlebrooks will likely now look to latch on elsewhere on a minors deal with a spring training invite.

Padres option Will Middlebrooks to Triple-A El Paso on Wednesday

The Padres optioned infielder Will Middlebrooks to Triple-A El Paso on Wednesday. Middlebrooks has struggled offensively all season, and he has made just one start since the All-Star break. He has just two hits in 20 at-bats this month. Middlebrooks is batting .212 in 2015, though he does have nine home runs on the year. Originally a third baseman, Middlebrooks has been seeing some time at shortstop throughout this season. "I think the original thought was he's going to be the starting third baseman for the San Diego Padres," Padres interim manager Pat Murphy said, per the San Diego Union-Tribune. "That didn't work out, so we gave him a look at shortstop in case there was a possibility he could stay on this club and help us in some way. And we think there's something there. But ultimately, we'd like him to come back as the starting third baseman and find himself down there, get consistent at-bats, come into his own. This has been a trend in his career, the last couple years. It's very common in a lot of young players, to go through this, but it's time for him to go down there and work it out. "Might take a week, might take two weeks, might take a month, might take two months," Murphy said of Middlebrooks' Triple-A stint. "We need the Will Middlebrooks that can impact the game, be an everyday player."

Padres' Will Middlebrooks to get more looks at shortstop

Padres infielder Will Middlebrooks didn't get into Saturday's game, but it looks as though he may be seeing more time as the team's shortstop moving forward. Middlebrooks was drafted as a shortstop by the Red Sox in 2007. He has started four games at shortstop, including three in a row prior to Saturday's rest day. "[It's] asking him to do a whole lot, but he's just the type of guy who can do it because he's so athletic. I think it's rejuvenated him a little bit," Padres interim manager Pat Murphy said, per MLB.com. "It's a work in progress, it's not anything that's going to be easy, but he's making it look easy right now. There's a lot to learn, he knows that." Middlebrooks is expected to split most of the time at shortstop with Clint Barmes, who homered on Saturday. Alexi Amarista, meanwhile, will likely move into a utility role, Murphy said. Middlebrooks has struggled offensively all season, owning a .213 average--though he does have nine home runs.
