Pirates' Luis Heredia: Exposed to Rule 5 draft

He's struggled with his weight and registered a 5.44 ERA and 1.73 WHIP in 86 innings for High-A Bradenton in 2015. At 21, Heredia still has a chance to turn his career around but it might not be with Pittsburgh.

Heredia starting off in Gulf Coast

Prospect Luis Heredia will start the season in the rookie Gulf Coast League club. Pittsburgh acquired the 16-year-old's rights from a team in Mexico last August for $2.6 million. Pirates director of player development Kyle Stark said Heredia will be on a very specific and limited workload throughout the summer. "He has made significant improvement as he continues to grow and develop at a very rapid rate, due to how young he is," Stark "He's got really good feel for many things and is a sponge. We're very encouraged by the progress he has made -- personally and professionally."
