Cubs SS Javier Baez goes 2 for 4 in Tuesday's win

Cubs shortstop Javier Baez went 2-for-4 with a double in Tuesday's 2-1 victory over the Pirates. Baez seems to be hitting his stride more and more with each game, with the 22-year-old star prospect now having hit safely five of his last seven contests, including three consecutive multi-hit performances in that span. While he certainly displayed some power by hitting nine homers in his 2014 stint with the major league club, Baez still scuffled his way to a .169 average and 95 strikeouts over 213 at-bats. A spectacular 2015 campaign in Triple-A Iowa that saw him hit .324 prior to his Sept. 1 call-up appears to have done wonders for Baez's overall game, although he has yet to truly thrive in the power department. The Cubs figure to give Baez as much seasoning as possible for the remainder of the season in the hopes of preparing him for a starting role on the 2016 squad.

Cubs GM won't be calling up 2B Javier Baez in near future

Cubs general manager Jed Hoyer has proclaimed that second baseman Javier Baez, who represents the next wave of his team's premier prospects, will not be promoted anytime soon. Baez is batting .306 with 11 home runs at Triple-A Iowa, but has lost time this season to a death in the family and wrist injury. Hoyer is seeking more consistency for a longer period from Baez. "We would love to get him going and not just for a week-to-10-day hot stretch," Hoyer told ESPN. "We want him to get into a rhythm and get established down there." Hoyer added that Baez will only be called up if the team faces an urgent need.

Report: Cubs dangle top middle infielders in Cole Hamels talks

The Cubs are offering standout prospect Javier Baez and established shortstop Starlin Castro in an attempt to land Phillies prized pitcher Cole Hamels, a team executive has told ESPN.com senior baseball writer Jayson Stark. Stark added, however, that the Phillies are not enthralled with either player. But the Cubs remain determined in their efforts to trade for Hamels. "I don't think they'll be in the rental market," the executive who has spoken to the Cubs told Stark. "So the value to them, with Hamels, is the three years [left on his contract]. This isn't just about selling out to go for the wild card. It's about getting ahead of [the free-agent ace market] this winter."
