Reds' Pedro Villarreal: Sings minor league deal with Reds

Villareal signed a minor league contract with the Reds on Saturday that includes an invite to major league spring training, Mark Sheldon of reports. Villarreal posted a 3.42 ERA with a 1.38 WHIP over 50.0 innings as a reliever with the Reds last season. He was non-tendered at the beginning of the offseason but he'll be brought back on a minor league deal that does include an invite to big league spring training. Given the Reds' bullpen overhaul, Villarreal could have an outside shot at landing a low-leverage role in the bullpen.

      Pedro Villarreal: Non-tendered by Reds

Villarreal will not be tendered a contract by the Reds, C. Trent Rosecrans of the Cincinnati Enquirer reports. His 3.42 ERA in 2015 was more than 50 points below the Reds' collective bullpen mark, but the peripherals suggest he overachieved. While he improved his control, Villareal had a 5.2 K/9 and a below-average groundball rate, with his FIP coming in a full run higher than his ERA.

Reds place RP Tony Cingrani on DL, promote RP Pedro Villarreal

The Reds have announced that they have placed left-hander Tony Cingrani on the 15-day disabled list with a left shoulder strain. The move is retroactive to Sunday. "I do imagine it's going to take some time to get the inflammation out, get the strength back up in the shoulder and then reinitiate throwing," manager Bryan Price said, per "He's got 15 days, and we'll see where he is at that point." His roster spot has been asssumed by righty reliever Pedro Villarreal. Cingrani has struggled lately with three runs allowed on seven hits in his last three innings pitched. He is 0-3 with a respectable 3.47 ERA on the year.

Reds designate P Jason Marquis, promote P Pedro Villarreal

The Reds have promoted Pedro Villarreal and designated for assignment fellow veteran right-hander Jason Marquis. The 36-year-old Marquis has failed to prove himself to be a still-viable starter. He has allowed 17 runs on 31 hits in his last 18 innings pitched. He has lost his last three decisions for Cincinnati, his sixth team since 2011. Villareal has fared no better in brief stints with the Reds. He owns a 6.75 career ERA.

Reds designate RP Kevin Gregg for assignment

The Reds announced Monday they have designated reliever Kevin Gregg for assignment and recalled pitcher Pedro Villareal from Triple-A Louisville. "His stuff looked good, he had velocity and the split-finger and the breaking ball and it just never came to -- even from, unfortunately, Opening Day with the two-run homer to tie the game," manager Bryan Price said. "That was very difficult. Sometimes it's tough to chase that off. He's a professional, he's a great guy, he's a tremendous worker. He was doing everything he could to get back on top, but it just didn't happen and now he'll be on his way to the next opportunity." Gregg appeared in 11 games for the Reds this season, compiling an 0-2 record and 10.13 ERA. He allowed three home runs in just 10 2/3 innings of work. "It's unfortunate. I know that the fans never got to see the best of Kevin," Price said. "We felt that in the six weeks that we had him in Spring Training that he was a guy who could pitch the eighth inning for us with his background as a setup man and a closer." Villareal has no record and a 10.13 ERA in two games with the Reds this season, and was 0-0 with a 4.26 ERA in Louisville.

Reds righty Pedro Villarreal recalled for double-dip

Reds reliever Pedro Villarreal likely won't be sticking around long, but he got his second sniff of the big leagues Saturday when he was called up from Triple-A Louisville. The 27-year-old Villarreal was promoted only to serve as the 26th man for a traditional doubleheader against the White Sox. He performed well in his first shot, pitching two scoreless innings against the Cubs on April 18.

Reds activate Homer Bailey from DL, starting Saturday

The Reds activated pitcher Homer Bailey from the disabled list, and he will make his season debut Saturday against the Cardinals. Bailey has been recovering from a torn flexor tendon in his finger last September. "It's great. It solidifies our rotation. We need him," manager Bryan Price said, per Fox Sports. "We need him to be a performer for us. We need him to give us an opportunity to be a better team in this division." RHP Pedro Villarreal was optioned to Louisville to make room for Bailey on the roster.
