Astros' Evan Gattis: Undergoes hernia surgery

Gattis recently underwent surgery to repair a hernia and is expected to miss most of spring training, the Houston Chronicle reports. Although the injury is not considered severe, Gattis will need 4-to-6 weeks to recover, meaning the Astros will be without the slugger's services for most of the Grapefruit League slate and quite possibly for Opening Day. Jonathan Singleton, Luis Valbuena, Marwin Gonzalez, and Matt Duffy could all be in the running to pick up at-bats as the designated hitter until Gattis returns.

Astros' Evan Gattis: Tendered a contract by Astros

Gattis was tendered a contract by the Astros on Wednesday, Evan Drellich of the Houston Chronicle reports. This makes it official that the 29-year-old slugger will return to the Astros. Gattis acted as the Astros primary designated hitter in 2015, and although his batting average wasn't great at .246, his 27 home runs, 88 RBI, and 11 triples were all career highs, making it a no-brainer for the Astros to bring his production back for another season.

Astros' Evan Gattis comes through in clutch with three-run HR

Astros designated hitter Evan Gattis went 2 for 3 with a go-ahead, three-run home run and a walk in a 10-6 win over Oakland on Saturday. That now marks the 25th homer for the Astros designated hitter and he's giving fantasy owners the power they were hoping for. His .206 ISO is fantastic and it makes him one of the best power-hitting catcher eligible players in baseball. The downside with Gattis is the dreadful .276 OBP and 0.24 walk-to-strikeout rate. He'll have trouble ever hitting above .250, but he should be a nice power source for years to come.
