A's SS Marcus Semien powers up for 13th homer in loss to Astros

Athletics shortstop Marcus Semien went 1 for 3 with a solo home run, a walk and two runs scored in a 10-6 loss to the Astros. Semien has a pretty nice bat, but it's hard to overlook 34 errors. Despite the errors, Semien is one of the best power-hitting shortstops in baseball, as he has 13 homers in 144 games. A surprising stat for Semien is that he has 11 steals and those two stats alone make him relevant in nearly every format.

Athletics SS Marcus Semien hits two-run home run in loss

Athletics shortstop Marcus Semien almost brought his team back to a victory on Wednesday with one swing of his bat. Semien hit a two-run home run in the ninth inning that cut the Yankees' lead down to 5-4, but that's as close as they would get. Semien finished the game 1 for 4 with two RBI. Semien extended his hitting streak to six games with the home run, his eighth of the year. Over the hit streak he is hitting .286 with six hits, two home runs and four RBI.

A's shortstop Marcus Semien goes 3 for 4 in victory on Tuesday

Athletics shortstop Marcus Semien had his first multi-hit performance since May 30. On Tuesday, Semien went 3 for 4 with a double, an RBI and a run scored in the 8-6 win over the Rangers. Despite the lack of multi-hit efforts, Semien has managed to maintain a .296 batting average over his last eight contests. Perhaps even more noteworthy for Semien is that he has not committed an error in his last seven games, his second-longest errorless streak of the season. He still leads the American League with 22 errors on the season.

Athletics shortstop Marcus Semien making strides defensively

Athletics shortstop Marcus Semien has committed four errors in his last 18 games. That might not seem like a positive development, but it is considering his previous struggles. Semien made 12 errors in May and leads the majors this season with 22. But new infield instructor and former Rangers manager Ron Washington sees vast improvement during daily drills he runs with Semien that take precedence over work in the batting cage. "I'm with him every day and I see the progress he makes," Washington told "I'm sitting up there wanted balls to go to him because I want him to play the ball." Semien appears more relaxed in the field and has been more adept converting routine plays. His throws are more forceful and accurate. Bob Melvin has noticed. "We all know he has the ability to do it, and he's showing more consistency," Melvin said. "He just looked more confident, and I think success breeds confidence." The improvement would be impossible if Semien allowed the errors to wreck that confidence. But that has not been the case. "You pay attention to it, everybody does," he said. "But you just have to move on, be mentally tough and want the next ball hit to you no matter what. ... That's the professional mindset. That's what we're here to do, is bounce back from mistakes."

Amidst slump, A's shortstop Marcus Semien sitting on Tuesday

Slumping Athletics shortstop Marcus Semien is getting the day off on Tuesday, as he is being held out of the lineup against the Padres. Semien had started 12 of 13 games for the A's this month, but is batting .195 with one extra-base hit over that span. He has also committed four errors this month. Eric Sogard will get the start at shortstop and bat second on Tuesday, in what is likely just a rest day for Semien.

Athletics SS Marcus Semien can't hit way out of slump

Athletics shortstop Marcus Semien's recent struggles at the plate continued during an 8-1 win Sunday against the Angels. Semien went hitless in five at-bats, which included three strikeouts. Semien is batting just .184 (7 for 38) with one double, no RBI, four walks, one run and 12 strikeouts in 11 June games. Unfortunately, Semien's hitting woes have lasted nearly a month. In his last 25 games, he has just a .189/.247/.233/.481 slash line. He has one triple, two doubles and one RBI in that span.

A's move Marcus Semien to No. 2 spot; Ben Zobrist to hit third

With Stephen Vogt sidelined with a leg issue, Athletics manager Bob Melvin shuffled the lineup, moving Marcus Semien back to the No. 2 hole, and moving Ben Zobrist to the No. 3 hole, which was normally occupied by Vogt. Semien has started a team-high 28 games at the No. 2 spot. He is hitting .277 with six homers and 16 RBI in 55 games. Zobrist has 17 starts at the No. 3 hole. He is hitting .222 with two homers and 14 RBI in 23 games.
