Orioles SP Mike Wright clobbered by Kansas City

The fading Orioles beat Kansas City on Friday night - no thanks to starter Mike Wright. Wright, who was coming off a dud last week, pitched another one against the Royals. He surrendered four runs on four hits in five innings with two walks and two strikeouts. A Lorenzo Cain homer in the first and Yunel Escobar double in the second got him off to a bad start. Another Cain blast in the sixth knocked him out. Only an offensive explosion by his teammates prevented him from taking the loss. Wright has allowed seven runs on 12 hits in eight innings in his last two outings. His ERA has soared to 5.45.

Orioles demote pitchers Mike Wright, Tyler Wilson

Either the Orioles prefer players whose last names start with the letter "g" over those that begin them with the letter "w" or they simply made moves Saturday to benefit the team. It is assumed to be the latter. Baltimore promoted Kevin Gausman and Mychal Givens while optioning fellow pitchers Mike Wright and Tyler Wilson. Wright lost his mojo after two excellent starts. He allowed 17 runs on 23 hits and eight walks in 13 1/3 innings over his last four outings and was knocked out in the second Friday night. He is departing with a 5.16 ERA. Wilson, who is leaving less than a week after his promotion, fared far better. He yielded just four runs in 17 innings over five appearances, including one quality start.
