      Yankees take 12 players off spring roster

      The Yankees removed 12 players from their spring roster Tuesday. Outfielder Ramon Flores was optioned to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, while Francisco Arcia, Tyler Austin, Bruce Billings, Robert Coello, Brian Gordon, Corban Joseph, Mark Montgomery, Pete O'Brien, Jose Pirela, Mason Williams and Chase Whitley were reassigned to minor-league camp.

      Mark Montgomery hits the minor-league DL

      Yankees relief prospect Mark Montgomery was placed on the seven-day disabled list at Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, but the Journal News reports Wednesday that it is mostly to do with getting him some rest. "Shoulder was a bit tired," vice president of baseball operations Mark Newman said. "He could have pitched but we want to give periodic breaks to some of the younger pitchers and this seemed like a good time. Back pitching on Saturday." The 22-year-old has a 3.00 ERA in Triple-A, but has struggled with his control recently.

      Yankees mull bullpen options

      Yankees general manager Brian Cashman said the team is mulling its roster options after placing reliever Joba Chamberlain (oblique) on the disabled list Thursday. Cashman said Chien-Ming Wang is not in the mix to take Chamberlain's roster spot, but Mark Montgomery, Preston Claiborne and Sam Demel are candidates in the short term.

      Yankees re-assign Mark Montgomery and Matt Tracy

      The Yankees announced Wednesday that pitchers Mark Montgomery and Matt Tracy have been re-assigned to minor-league camp. Montgomery made seven appearances for the Yankees this spring, allowing two earned runs in 5 2/3 innings but walked six batters and allowed six hits. Tracy surrendered four earned runs in his three innings of work over three appearances.
