      Cubs option Christian Villanueva and Rafael Lopez to AAA

      The Cubs optioned two players to Triple-A Iowa and assigned another six players to minor league camp on Monday. Infielder Christian Villanueva and catcher Rafael Lopez were optioned to Triple-A. Villanueva was hitless with four strikeouts and an RBI in eight at bats, this spring. Lopez hit .250 with two RBI. The non-roster invitees assigned to the minors were RHP Corey Black (13.50 ERA in 1.1 spring innings), RHP Pierce Johnson (one hit and three walks in four scoreless innings), RHP Armando Rivero (27.00 ERA in a third of an inning), RHP Donn Roach (12.00 ERA in three innings), LHP Hunter Cervenka (0-1, 15.43) and infielder Logan Watkins (no spring at bats).

      Cubs cut eight from major-league camp

      The Cubs optioned five players to Triple-A Iowa Tuesday, including outfielder Brett Jackson, infielders Josh Vitters and Christian Villanueva and pitchers Zac Rosscup and Arodys Vizcaino. The team also reassigned catcher Rafael Lopez, outfielder Mitch Maier and pitcher Armando Rivero to minor-league camp.

      Jorge Soler among Cubs' cuts

      The Chicago Cubs made another wave of cuts Sunday, optioning outfielder Jorge Soler to Class A Daytona; shortstop Junior Lake to Triple-A Iowa and third baseman Christian Villanueva to Double-A Tennessee. At just 21, Soler is viewed as one of the club's top prospects, but the Cubs have been adamant about not rushing his development. He posted a .299 batting average with 12 extra-base hits and 12 stolen bases in just 34 games across two lower levels of the minors last year.

      Villanueva packed to Cubs

      The Cubs acquired minor-league prospects Christian Villanueva and Kyle Hendricks from the Rangers in exchange for starting pitcher Ryan Dempster on Tuesday. Both players are currently with Class A Myrtle Beach. Villanueva, 21, signed with Texas as a non-drafted free agent in 2008.
