Melvin Mercedes receives 'good' demotion to Toledo

Tigers 23-year-old right-hander Melvin Mercedes has been demoted - but it was a wonderful demotion for him. Rather than sending him to Double-A Erie, they banished him to Triple-A Toledo, where he could serve as the closer. The Tigers could groom Mercedes for that spot. They signed 39-year-old Joe Nathan in the offseason for that role, but will need to groom a closer for the future. Mercedes, however, has proven neither consistent nor a premier strikeout pitcher at the minor league level.
