      Rockies RP Gonzalez German pitches shutout frame for save

      Rockies reliever Gonzalez Germen worked around a hit and a walk in the bottom of the 16th inning early Wednesday morning against the Dodgers to claim his first save of the season. Germen was the 13th and final pitcher the Rockies used in the game, setting a franchise record. The save opportunity came about for Germen after regular closer John Axford coughed up a 4-3 lead in the bottom of the 11th inning.

      Gonzalez Germen to make first-career start for Rockies on Friday

      With David Hale no longer an option to start on Friday, the Rockies will turn to right-hander Gonzalez Germen to make the start against the Braves, according to MLB.com. The Rockies claimed Germen off waivers from the Cubs on Tuesday, but he has not pitched since July 2 with Triple-A Iowa. Germen has never started a big-league game in his three-year career, and his last minor-league start came in 2012 when he was in the Mets' system. Hale, who was originally scheduled to start on Friday, was forced into action on Thursday after a two-hour rain delay knocked Kyle Kendrick from the game. Hale eventually left that game with a groin strain.

      The Rockies have claimed right-hander Gonzalez Germen off waivers from the Cubs on Tuesday, and optioned him to Triple-A Alburquerque. Germen was designated for assignment by the Cubs over the weekend. He made six appearances with Chicago at the end of April and beginning of May, posting a 7.50 ERA in six innings of relief. First baseman Justin Morneau, out with a concussion, was also transferred to the 60-day DL on Tuesday.

      Cubs add Germen, option Szczur, transfer Turner to 60-day DL

      The Cubs selected the contract of pitcher Gonzalez Germen and optioned outfielder Matt Szczur to Triple-A Iowa Sunday. Germen made 25 appearances with the Cubs last season, posting a 4.75 ERA and 31:14 K:BB ratio in 30 1/3 innings. He tossed 4 2/3 hitless innings in Triple-A before being brought up but issued three walks while striking out five. Szczur went 2 for 10 with three walks and two stolen bases before being optioned. To clear a spot on the 40-man roster for Germen, the Cubs also transferred pitcher Jacob Turner to the 60-day disabled list. He's recovering from a flexor strain and bone bruise in his elbow.
