Nationals RP Felipe Rivero picks up first career save in win over Braves

Nationals reliever Felipe Rivero earned his first career save Thursday, pitching two flawless innings with two strikeouts against the Braves. He needed only 23 pitches (16 of them strikes) to cruise through the two frames. It's nice that Rivero is getting rewarded with late-season save chances thanks to Jonathan Papelbon's temper, as the rookie's done terrific work out of the Nats' bullpen this year, with an impressive 0.97 WHIP to go with his 2.85 ERA.

Nationals could turn to reliever Felipe Rivero for save chances

Nationals reliever Felipe Rivero could see some save opportunities over the final week of the season following the suspension of Jonathan Papelbon. He's been used as a set-up man in September and Rivero has a strong 2.98 ERA, 1.01 WHIP and 38:11 K:BB ratio in 45.1 innings this season, but Casey Janssen could be ahead of him in the closing pecking order given the veteran's previous experience in the role with the Blue Jays.

Casey Janssen, Felipe Rivero could see save opportunities for Nats

Casey Janssen and Felipe Rivero could see some save opportunities for the Nationals over the final week of the season following the suspension of Jonathan Papelbon. Janssen hasn't been used in many high-leverage situations in the second half, but he is the only reliever in the bullpen with recent closing experience. The Nats could elect to give younger arms like Rivero a look in the role as well. Rivero has been used as a setup man in September. He has posted a strong 2.98 ERA, 1.01 WHIP and 38:11 K:BB ratio in 45 1/3 innings this season.
