Cubs' Daniel Vogelbach: Added to 40-man roster

Vogelbach was added to the Cubs' 40-man roster on Friday, the Daily Herald's Bruce Miles reports. He should spend the majority of his age-23 season at Triple-A, as the Cubs do not have an opening for the bulky slugger. That said, if he were traded to an American League team, Vogelbach would immediately become one of the more exciting designated hitters from a fantasy standpoint.

Rival executive: Cubs willing to deal prospects Baez, Vogelbach

The Cubs appear willing to trade prospects Javier Baez and Dan Vogelbach, a rival executive told CBSSports.com Baseball Insider Jon Heyman. The executive suggests it is partly because both players were drafted by a previous regime. However, Heyman writes the reality is there are issues with Baez and Vogelbach. Baez is working on cutting down his strikeouts and getting rid of the perception he "doesn't make contact," according to one rival's assessment. One scout said Vogelbach is a "30 fielder," using scout parlance for well-below average on the 20-80 scale. Vogelbach was the Cubs' minor-league player of the month for April. The first baseman has a .328/.449/.515/.964 slash line through 39 games for Double-A Tennessee. He has a career .289/.382/.485/.867 slash line. He was a second-round pick in 2011. Baez was sent to the minors after struggling in spring training. He missed some time due to a personal leave, but the former top-10 prospect has a .284/.369/.405/.774 slash line through 20 games for Triple-A Iowa. He has 22 strikeouts in 20 games.

Daniel Vogelbach out to prove he can be effective at first base

Cubs first base prospect Daniel Vogelbach showed up to spring training 30 pounds lighter in an attempt to prove to his critics he can be athletic enough to play in the field, per MLB.com. "In the offseason, I really took it seriously to get myself in shape so there was no question about whether I could play first base or am I only going to be a DH?" said Vogelbach, who is considered the Cubs' 10th-best prospect by MLB.com. "I want to play first base, I want to be on the field. That's the type of player I am, I want to be on the field at all times." The biggest concern for Vogelbach was would the weight loss lead to him losing some power. Vogelbach, who has a career .515 slugging percentage in the minors, doesn't feel that has happened. "I think I gained power," Vogelbach said. "I got a lot stronger with Doug [Jarrow, Cubs strength coach] and being home lifting a lot. I'm a lot looser with losing the weight. I can move better, not only in the field but swinging. I actually feel better at the plate than I usually do."
